Jose Miguel Ramirez hits a drive down the field at the AAC Championship

Led by an incredible second-place finish by Jose Miguel Ramirez, the Shocker men’s golf team wrapped up its 2024-25 campaign with a ninth-place finish at the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship April 23 at the Ritz-Carlton Members Club.

Ramirez made a big mark in the Shocker record books with his score of 204 (-12). His score was the best by any Shocker at the AAC Championship since the team began competing in the AAC in 2018, and his 12 strokes under par finish is the best score relative to par at the AAC Championship for the Shockers. His runner-up finish is tied for the best individual finish in team history at the AAC Championship, matching Marcus Wochner, who tied for second in 2021. South Florida’s No. 49-ranked Jake Peacock beat out WSU’s Ramirez by just two strokes for the individual trophy, finishing with a 202 (-14) score.

Jose Carletta surged in the final two rounds, leaping into the tournament top 15 with a 66 (-6) score in round three, tying the best-ever individual round for the Shockers at the AAC Championship. Carletta did not record a score worse than par on any of his final 27 holes in the tournament and birdied 10 of those holes.

Kate Tilma all-conference | Only the second all-conference selection in the AAC in program history

After putting together the second-best finish by any Shocker at the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship, Shocker women’s golfer Kate Tilma was named to the 2025 AAC Women’s Golf All-Conference team April 22.

Tilma’s All-Conference honor was earned by finishing in the top seven on the individual leaderboard last week at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida. Her round two 18-hole score of 67 was the best of any competitor in any of the tournament’s three rounds.

The Wichita native is one of only two Shockers to finish in the top ten at the AAC Championship, surpassed only by Taryn Torgerson’s win in 2018. The 67 score tied the second-best 18-hole score by any Shocker all-time in any tournament, only surpassed by Torgerson’s 64 at the 2018 AAC Championship. Tilma became the first Shocker not named Torgerson to record a round score of 67 or better since Bryce Schroeder shot a 67 at the Johnie Imes Invitational Sept. 29, 2015.

Tilma is only the second Shocker to earn all-conference honors since Wichita State joined the American for the 2017-18 season. Tilma led the Shockers to an eighth-place finish at the AAC Championship, the second-best finish in team history.
