Down to its final three outs and trailing 2-1, Shocker baseball scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to stun Florida Atlantic and advance in the American Conference Championship with a 3-2 win May 20 at BayCare Ballpark.

The Shockers advance to take on No. 3 Rice at noon Thursday, May 21. WSU has now advanced to the double-elimination portion of the bracket.

The Basketball Tournament (TBT) unveiled a new format and winner-take-all $2 million prize, headlined by a first-round best-of-three series between defending TBT champions AfterShocks (Wichita State) and The Enchantment (New Mexico).

TBT 2026 will feature 16 teams, with eight alumni teams and eight non-alumni teams competing on two separate sides of the bracket. TBT’s first round will now be a best-of-three series before returning to the single-elimination format for future rounds. Just five wins are needed to capture TBT’s $2 million prize.

All three games of the series will be played at Charles Koch Arena. The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 20 and will be televised live on FS1. Game two is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 23 and will be televised live on FS2. Game three (if necessary) will be played at 8 p.m. July 24 and will be streamed live on FS2.

Three Shocker baseball players were named to the 2026 American Conference All-Conference teams. Jayson Jones was named First Team third baseman and Newcomer Position Player of the Year, while right-handed pitchers Matthew Cuccias and Brady Pacha were named Second Team starting pitcher and relief pitcher, respectively.

Jones is the first Shocker to be named Newcomer Position Player of the Year since Brock Rodden in 2022.

Kinzey Woody runs to home plate after a home run

Softball America announced its All-America teams, and Wichita State’s Kinzey Woody earned Freshman All-America honors, the publication announced Tuesday morning.

The American Conference Player and Freshman of the Year slashed .359/.489/.724 with 11 doubles, 14 home runs and 50 RBIs, while nearly hitting for the triple crown in conference play. Woody led the league in batting average (.476), slugging percentage (1.000), on base percentage (.587), hits (39), RBIs (36), while her 12 home runs were two shy of her teammate Ausha Moore with 14.

Woody became the first player in American Conference history to win both Player and Freshman of the Year honors in the same season.

Shocker baseball coughed up a two-run lead in the ninth inning but came back with three runs in the 10th to claim an 8-5 win over South Florida May 16 at USF Baseball Stadium.

With the win, the Shockers (28-27, 12-15) earn the #7 seed in the American Conference Championship beginning next week at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida. Wichita State will take on #6 seed Florida Atlantic at noon Wednesday, May 20 in a single-elimination contest. If the Shockers win, the team will advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket against #3 seed Rice Thursday, May 21.

The Shocker men’s track and field team claimed its third American Conference Outdoor Championship Saturday at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium.

Josh Parrish led the Shockers with 26.5 points, the most by any athlete in the competition, to be named the American Conference Championship Most Valuable Performer.

Shocker softball completed its series sweep of Memphis on the final day of the team’s regular season with a 10-5 win May 2 at Wilkins Stadium and secured a share of the American Conference regular season title.

Wichita State (35-16, 21-6) will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s American Conference Championship after South Florida completed a sweep of North Texas. The Bulls will be the top seed after owning the tiebreaker. Wichita State will receive a double bye into the semifinals where the team waits to see its opponent. The Shockers will take the field at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 8 on ESPN+.

The regular season championship is Shocker softball’s third as a member of the American and first since 2023.

Jose Miguel Ramirez shattered the program record for career stroke average as Shocker men’s golf finished 10th at the American Championship April 29 at The Ritz-Carlton Members Club.

In his two seasons as a Shocker, Ramirez compiled a career stroke average of 71.24, breaking the previous record of 72.07 set by Blake Lorenz (2022-24). Ramirez also recorded the second-lowest single-season stroke average in program history at 71.03 during the 2025-26 season.

As a team, Wichita State recorded rounds of 290, 295 and 292 for a total of 877, finishing 13 strokes over par. No. 22 Charlotte won the team title at 48-under 816. Memphis’ Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco won a sudden-death playoff to capture the individual title at 14-under 202.

Al Mashni prepares to hit a serve back at his opponent during a set

Shocker men’s tennis’ Zaid Al Mashni was named an All-Conference Honors selection April 28. Al Mashni is the first men’s tennis Shocker to earn all-conference honors since Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa in 2021 and the first in the Darragh Glavin era.

The sophomore from Jordan posted records of 14-8 in singles and 14-5 in doubles. He recorded 11 singles wins and 13 doubles wins in dual matches this season. He was ranked throughout the spring and climbed as high as No. 66 during the fall season.

Shocker women’s tennis’ Xin Tong Wang was named the American Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, while Giorgia Roselli and Theodora Chantava earned All-Conference Honors April 28.

Wang, a junior from Hangzhou, China, is the first player in program history to earn American Conference Player of the Year honors. She is the first Shocker to be named player of the year since Giulia Guidetti won the Missouri Valley Conference award in 2017. Wang has been named all-conference in each of her three seasons at Wichita State.

Roselli, a junior from Pescara, Italy, earned her second all-conference honor. She is just the third Shocker to earn multiple all-conference honors in the American Conference, joining Wang and Fatima Bizhukova.

Chantava, a senior from Grevena, Greece, closes her Shocker career with her first all-conference honor. She becomes the fifth Shocker to earn all-conference recognition since Wichita State joined the American Conference.
