A group of physical therapy doctoral students is recruiting participants for a study to test the effects of vestibular training in a balance program. This study is open to all individuals, but is meant to target people who have had a concussion in the past three years.

Participants will be required to complete balance testing and an eight-week balance training exercise program. The 10- to 15-minute exercises can be completed at home.

The Wichita State chapter promotes Reading is Leading, hosts an annual book drive, and reads to children at local elementary schools.

Call for Volunteers! Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering, Friday, November 19.

The College of Engineering is seeking faculty and staff from across the university to serve as group activity judges for the college’s annual Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering (WISE) 9-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at the Rhatigan Student Center (room 142). If you are interested in judging, please sign up by Nov. 12.

Judges do not need to have a background in engineering or computing. Students are judged on their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills rather than their knowledge of engineering concepts. At the event, judging teams of two people will observe and score a small group of four to five competitors.

    Volunteers will sort and organize items for donation to local nonprofits.

The GIV program accepts donated items from companies and offers them at no charge to nonprofits throughout the state. The GIV program distributes $400,000 to $1 million worth of donated items each year to more than 100 area nonprofits (including agencies not funded by United Way).

The Cohen Honors College is seeking faculty mentors to work with students selected for the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) in STEM. Applicants should fill out the faculty application for FYRE no later than Oct. 15.

Faculty are encouraged to nominate graduate students to serve as FYRE mentors. First-year undergraduate students interested in applying to the FYRE in STEM program can apply by completing the FYRE in STEM Student Application.

The mission of this FYRE in STEM program is to build a community of STEM students, faculty and professionals from various STEM backgrounds to support young STEM majors or potential majors as they form identities as members of the scientific community, thus improving the likelihood that they will persist to graduation.

The Department of Human Performance Studies-Exercise Science, in collaboration with the Department of Psychology-Clinical Psychology, is seeking volunteers for a study. The study will focus on the accuracy of reaction time and cognitive function tests in comparison with traditional tests widely accepted and used in a clinical and sport setting.

The procedures will include a study of participants’ reaction time, cognitive function and balance. These will then be assessed with different mobile device applications, a computer-based test and traditional paper tests. Three- to five-minute breaks will be allowed between tests. Participation will include a one-time, 2.5-hour session.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria:

  • Participants must be age 18 or older.
  • No known muscular disorders
  • No known neurocognitive disorders
  • No known orthopedic disorders
  • No known balance disorders
  • No uncorrected vision
  • Eyeglass and contact wearers are welcome.

The study will be conducted at the Heskett Center Human Performance Lab (Room 210). SONA Credits will be available to Wichita State Students. There is no financial compensation for participation in this study.

Join the Community Service Board for WSU’s largest one-day volunteer event beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 2. Students, faculty, staff, individuals, groups and organizations, are invited to attend.

Check-in for Wu’s Big Event will be from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. A kick-off with a light breakfast and information about the volunteer sites will begin at 9 a.m. at the Beggs Ballroom located on the third floor of the Rhatigan Student Center (RSC).

After the kick-off, participants will load buses and head to each service site by 10 a.m. Volunteers will work until 12 p.m. and return to the RSC for lunch and celebration until 2 p.m. Lunch, water and a free T-shirt will be provided to all participants.
