Wichita State is hosting a blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at its satellite location in Haysville. Due to a national blood shortage, all blood types are needed, particularly type O, as well as platelets, to help patients get the care they need.

Volunteers are requested from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 for the fall 2021 commencement ceremony at Koch Arena. The ceremony begins at 2:30 pm.

Volunteers will welcome guests and graduates at this event, and food will be provided.

A doctoral student in communication sciences and disorders is conducting a study on comparison of an existing and a newly developed clinical technique for evaluating function of the middle ear.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had a cold or flu in the past two weeks. Participants will receive a no-cost comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about one hour in room 106 of Hubbard Hall.

A group of physical therapy doctoral students is recruiting participants aged 65 and older for a home exercise research study to improve balance and walking speed. Participation in this study may help the field of physical therapy understand better methods to improve balance and walking speed using home exercise programs.

If chosen to participate in the eight-week study, subjects will exercise in the comfort of their own homes and will be given step-by-step instructions on the exercises, which will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes per day. Participants will need to recruit pre- and post-program results. It will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. Meals on Wheels of Wichita. Volunteers will meet at Senior Services of Wichita at 10:30am for a brief orientation and guidance on delivering food according to proper social distancing guidelines. The address for the event is 200 S. Walnut, Wichita KS 67213. Volunteers will then be given food and addresses to deliver food. Volunteers must have reliable transportation and the volunteer shift should end by 1:00pm. The dates for this event include September 17th, October 15th, and November 12th. All service events may be cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions released by the university. Volunteers will be notified if the event is cancelled. Join the Community Service Board for a morning of delivering meals with Meals on Wheels. Volunteers will be given instructions about volunteering with addresses and food for delivery. Volunteer times are from  10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 15 and Nov. 12.

The United Way Give Items of Value (GIV) program is seeking volunteers in its efforts to collect items from companies and distribute them to Kansas nonprofits.

The GIV program distributes $400,000 to $1 million worth of donated items each year to more than 100 area nonprofits (including agencies not funded by United Way). GIV partners with Good 360 to obtain donated products from national retailers.

Those who are interested in volunteering for the GIV program should meet at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 and Nov. 5 at the GIV Warehouse. Additional information is available at the link below.

A group of physical therapy doctoral students is recruiting participants for a study to test the effects of vestibular training in a balance program. This study is open to all individuals, but is meant to target people who have had a concussion in the past three years.

Participants will be required to complete balance testing and an eight-week balance training exercise program. The 10- to 15-minute exercises can be completed at home.
