We have seen an increase in fake job offers. If anyone has sent you an email with an unsolicited job and an offer to send you a large amount of money in checks, this is most likely a scam.

Examples of this fraud requests:

  • The sender does not work at the organization.
  • The reply-to address is a free email account (such as Gmail or Yahoo) for jobs at prestigious international organizations. Those organizations have their own email address and never use free email.
  • As a reading test, they ask that you contact them from a free email service. This helps them bypass fraud monitoring tools.
  • Conversations only over email and text with statements around the inability to speak due to being busy or traveling.
  • Checks are mailed to you to cash, and they ask you to send them the money via a cash app.
  • They cannot meet you in person and only speak via text and email.
  • There is no job application or other job paperwork.

Never cash checks received from an unknown source. Once the bank finds out it is a fake check, it will take the money from your account.

Concerned the email is a scam? Send it to spamreport@wichita.edu.

Beocat HPC at Kansas State University will hold two workshops in the afternoons of Oct. 17-18 to teach introductions to Linux, Beocat and more advanced topics in Linux and the Open OnDemand interface to Beocat. BeoShock users are welcome to participate remotely through Zoom at the link below.

Both sessions will be recorded and posted to Beocat YouTube channel. Beocat uses a similar CentOS system and Slurm job scheduler as BeoShock, so this workshop would be a good training opportunity for both new and experienced BeoShock users. The HPC user guides also cover the basic topics (login, job submission, examples for python, and C++) for BeoShock. Below is the agenda:

2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17

  1. Introduction to Linux
  2. Introduction to High-Performance Computing: How to use Beocat

2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18

The WSU Reporting upgrade has been postponed, and it will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 18.

WSU Reporting will be receiving an upgrade to Cognos version 11.2.2 from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. The system will be unavailable during this time.

Due to the State of Kansas policy requirements, a screen lock policy will be rolling out to all university-owned computers on Friday, Aug. 5. With the exception of master classrooms and labs, all Wichita State University-owned computers will automatically lock after 15 minutes of inactivity.

This policy will provide data security and prevent unwanted users from accessing the data on the computer. The state of Kansas has made a Screen Lock Policy a requirement among institutions and agencies. Instituting this policy helps to ensure we meet compliance obligations undertaken by many areas of the university.

As part of our campus-wide migration to using Microsoft Defender, Information Technology Services is scheduling a process to remove the old platform (Sophos) from Windows computers at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 8. If necessary to address any remaining installations, maintenance will continue at noon on three consecutive Tuesdays on July 12, July 19, and July 26.

The removal will be executed in the background. Faculty and staff will still be able to continue working during the uninstall process. However, after the removal of Sophos, the computer will need to be rebooted. There will be a pop-up message alerting members to reboot with a delay of 15 minutes. It is highly recommended that members save and close their work prior to restarting to prevent data loss during the reboot.

To receive this update, please leave the office computer powered on and connected to the network, with the screen locked.  If the computer is off-campus, members must have it powered on and connected to the network and VPN.
