Microsoft Defender Weekly Scan reminder

Information Security and Information Technology Services (ITS) would like to remind you that every week, Microsoft Defender will be completing a full scan of Wichita State-owned computers starting at 3 a.m. on Thursdays.

Please make sure your computer remains powered on to allow the scan to run. If your computer is turned off during the scheduled time, the scanning will start as soon as your computer turns on.

There should be no impact to the end user when the scan occurs during the scheduled time. However, there may be a slight decrease in device performance should the scan run during work hours.

Please note, the Microsoft Defender scan is applied to all Wichita State-owned devices, without exception.

For questions, contact the ITS Help Desk at 316-978-4357, option 1, or helpdesk@wichita.edu.

Upgrading to Windows 11

Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 in October 2025. In order to meet security compliance, all university Windows machines will be required to be on Windows 11 by that date.

To facilitate an orderly transition, Wichita State’s Information Technology Services (ITS) will start pushing upgrades from Windows 10 to Windows 11 starting Aug. 1 2024 on a phased approach. This will be an “in place” upgrade and should not affect your data. Please note, your machine will reboot after the upgrade. ITS will endeavor to contact you prior to your scheduled upgrade period with more precise timing.

If your device is not compatible with Windows 11, ITS will contact you letting you know that the device will need to be replaced.

ITS understands that upgrading to a new operating system can be stressful. Please check out this site to familiarize yourself with Windows 11: Meet Windows 11 – Microsoft Support.

If your computer is already on Windows 11, no changes will be made, and you will not receive communication from ITS regarding this upgrade.

If you have any questions, contact Jessica Wolf with ITS Desktop Support at Jessica.Wolf@wichita.edu or the ITS Help Desk at Helpdesk@wichita.edu.

Mockup of the web and mobile versions of the myWSU redesign

Starting Monday, Aug. 5, Information Technology Services (ITS) will roll out a revamped myWSU portal. This upgrade is the first step on the road toward a modernized myWSU portal experience.

Here’s what’s new and improved:

  • Mobile-friendly design: Access myWSU seamlessly on your smartphone or tablet with no more pinching and zooming.
  • Sleeker interface: The look and feel more closely aligns with wichita.edu webpages.
  • Clutter-free pages: Find what you need faster with better organization and prioritization of key links.
  • New “Application for Degree” admin tab: Quickly access ADF features in a dedicated tab.

As with any upgrade, some features will be moved or retired, notably:

  • Financial Advisor Channel: This channel has been phased out by the vendor, but you’ll still find this information elsewhere on the new myWSU.
  • Student Work Study Balance Channel: This channel has also been phased out by the vendor.

ITS excited about these enhancements and believe it will make your experience with myWSU smoother and more intuitive. Stay tuned for more updates.
