The Barton School of Business is offering a four-week online course, Doing Business in Asia (IB 690M) for graduate and advanced undergraduate credit beginning June 6. The class is also open to the community. No prerequisites are required.

This course is for anyone with an interest in developing awareness, skills, and resources to understand entering and succeeding in Asian markets and is taught by Dr. Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton distinguished chair in International Business and director of the Center for International Business Advancement. Haley is a recognized global expert on the subject and has lived and worked on five continents including Asia (in India, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia).

CRN 31045 is a hands-on elective course, we will examine what makes or breaks a great leader — not just in companies, but in life. This course includes travel to Chicago for a large, annual convention, as well as tours of local businesses and organizations with leadership. Course timeline:

• June 7 — in person at WSU
• June 13-17 — Chicago
• June 21 — in person at WSU
• June 28— in person at WSU

The INSPYRE Lab is looking for undergraduates to be mentors in our Lunch Buddy Program. Students will visit an elementary school in the Wichita area twice a week during lunch and recess and mentor a child who has been identified as at-risk for being bullied.

This is not a typical course and does not have a weekly class component. If you are interested in working with kids, this is a great opportunity. All majors are welcome to apply.

Japanese Culture and Society (JAPN 324) is now being offered for the first time for spring 2022 at 7:05-9:45 p.m. Wednesdays at the Wichita State South campus. The course is a hi-flex course that students can attend either virtually or in person.

During the course, students will learn about Japanese history, cultural background, arts and modern issues. The course counts toward a minor in Japanese and qualifies for general education credits.

No previous Japanese courses are required to enroll.

Elementary Japanese I (JAPN 111) will be offered as a hi-flex course for the spring 2022 semester. The class will meet at 9:30-10:55 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Jan. 18-May 22 at the South Campus.

The course is also available for students who are unable to meet on campus, or who feel uncomfortable meeting on campus via Zoom. Students unable to attend class should contact the instructor to discuss alternatives jennifer.musaji@wichita.edu.

Wichita State University South will offer (SPAN 324) Spanish for the Professions (CRN 26913). The class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at WSU South.

This intermediate Spanish language and culture course will prepare students to communicate in Spanish in professional contexts while in the United States and abroad.

Wichita State students can now enroll in LASI 170 Introduction to Library Research. This eight-week, one-credit class is great for students who are:

• New to WSU.
• Starting programs that require research.
• Unsure of the best strategies for using library databases to find scholarly sources.
• Going into a graduate program that requires research.

The INSPYRE research lab, directed by Dr. Samantha Slade, is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a three-hour course in the spring 2022 semester. Mentors will spend lunch and recess with an elementary school student twice each week. In return, mentors receive three hours of course credit and many great experiences.  

Mentors are required to pass a background check, have reliable transportation to and from the elementary school, have lunch availability 11 a.m-2 p.m. at least twice a week, and be available for training at the beginning of the semester.   

We do not meet regularly like traditional classes (mentoring takes the place of class time). We do have a course syllabus, class readings and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. We are interested in recruiting mentors from any college and major.

Are you interested in Japanese culture, an anime fan who would like to expand to other forms of media or someone who likes monster movies? Japanese Film (JAPN 300B) is now available 1-3:45 p.m. Mondays at Wichita State’s South Campus.

The course will include viewings of classic and modern films and discuss how they reflect Japanese society. This course counts for three of the 11 credits toward a minor in the Japanese language. The course is taught in English and no prerequisites are required.

Wichita State University now offers an Applied Sustainability in Innovation course through the College of Innovation and Design. This interdisciplinary minor allows students to select courses from departments all across campus to pursue a broad, holistic educational approach to current topics in sustainability and is available for fall 2021.
