Wichita State defeated seven top-20 ranked teams and rattled off eight consecutive wins on its way to a runner-up finish at Destination Orlando, the first regular season tournament of the season.

Aleesha Oden (230.8 average) and Sara Duque Jiménez (220.2) snagged spots on the All-Tournament team to lead Wichita State individually. Morgan Kline (195.0), Kendall Bollea (172.4) and Paige Wagner (172.2) rounded out the regular lineup for Holly Harris and the Shockers.

The Shockers fell, 4-1, to #1-ranked Jacksonville State in the best-of-seven final, capping off an undefeated weekend for the Gamecocks who went 11-0 in the Baker and traditional matches. Wichita State will carry an 11-2 record into next weekend’s Track Kat Klash at Emerald Bowl in Houston, beginning Friday, Oct. 31.

Kate Tilma and Mackenzie Wilson both earned top 10 finishes to lead Shocker women’s golf to a third-place finish in the Powercat Invitational Oct. 21 at Colbert Hills Golf Club.

Wichita State recorded rounds of 303, 303 and 319 for a total score of 925, 61 strokes over par. Host Kansas State cruised to the team title, finishing 27 strokes ahead of second-place Cincinnati.

Wichita State was topped only by Power Four opponents — the Wildcats and Bearcats — on its way to a fourth top-five team finish of the fall season. The four top-five finishes match the most for the Shockers in a single fall season since joining the American Conference in 2017-18. It’s also the most top-five finishes in any season since 2017-18, when they recorded seven total.

Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli’s run to the doubles quarterfinals highlighted the week for the Shocker women’s tennis team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships.

After a first-round bye, Wang and Roselli defeated a pair from Missouri, 8-5, to reach the Round of 16. They then beat a duo from Nebraska, 8-4, to advance to the quarterfinals, where they ultimately fell to the No. 7-seeded team from Oklahoma, 8-2.

In singles, Kudryavtseva and Nikolenko won two qualifying matches each to reach the main draw, putting a total of seven Shockers in the field. Only Kudryavtseva and Wang earned main-draw wins, both in the Round of 64.

The Shocker women’s bowling team got standout performances from Morgan Kline and Sara Duque Jimenez, but finished 10th at the Mid-States Championships after an injury forced the Shockers to compete with just four bowlers for most of Saturday and all of Sunday’s Baker games.

Kline finished second in the individual standings with a 212.17 average, highlighted by a personal best 267 in the fourth game of Saturday’s action. Duque Jimenez was not far behind, posting a 208.67 average that included games of 225 and 222. Both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team, which was led by MVP Emily Hart of Sam Houston.

Houston also claimed the team title, taking down Newman 3-2 in the best of five championship match.

The Shocker Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon starts at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17 in the Aetna Multi-Purpose Center at Charles Koch Arena. Lunch is served at noon and programming will begin soon after.

Zaid Al Mashni winds up to hit a serve

Shocker men’s tennis sophomore Zaid Al Mashni’s run to the singles round of 16 highlighted the week for the Shockers at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships in Oklahoma.

Al Mashni, the top seed in singles qualifying at regionals, dispatched Oral Roberts’ Lucas Couy 6-2, 6-4 Oct. 8 to reach the main draw. In the main draw, the sophomore defeated Memphis’ Marcos Castro Fabra 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the round of 64, and followed it with a win over six-seed Jakub Vrba from Arkansas 6-3, 6-4 to move into the round of 16. In the round of 16, Al Mashni fell to Arkansas’ Ben Weintraub 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, ending his run.

Kenyon Giles named to Preseason First Team All-Conference

Shocker men’s basketball senior guard Kenyon Giles was named to the American Preseason All-Conference First Team, as selected by the league’s coaches.

The Chesapeake, Virginia native is a UNC Greensboro transfer who averaged better than 15 points per game on 40% shooting from beyond the arc last season for the Spartans.

Giles is just the fourth Shocker to earn American Preseason All-Conference honors, and first since Tyson Etienne in 2021. Three of the four Shockers who have collected preseason American honors have been named to the first team (Giles, Etienne and Landry Shamet). Markis McDuffie was a second team pick in 2018.

Emilio Arellano Lamas earned his third consecutive top 10 individual finish as Shocker men’s golf took third in the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational Oct. 7.

The Shockers posted rounds of 292, 281, 292 for an 865 (+1) team score. Kansas City and St. Thomas both edged the Shockers with matching 862 (-2) performances to split the team title. The Shockers’ third-place finish is their third consecutive tournament finish in the top five, the first time Wichita State has posted three successive top-five finishes since the 2020-21 season.

WSU MBB vs Drake | Sat, Oct. 11 at 1pm | Charles Koch Arena

Shocker men’s basketball hosts Drake in a charity scrimmage at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 in Charles Koch Arena. WSU students, faculty, staff and administration can claim a general admission ticket on game day at the Shocker Ticket Office for no cost with their Shocker ID. All youth 18 and under can also claim a ticket at no cost.

All other tickets are $20 with proceeds benefiting Cheese Johnson’s UJUMP Junior Mentoring Program and the Wichita Children’s Home.
