Students, faculty, staff and campus innovation partners are invited to attend the Purple Mile, an annual memorial walk held for those who have lost their lives to domestic violence beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the north patio of the Rhatigan Student Center. The event also serves as an opportunity to increase community networking, resourcing and awareness about the issue of domestic violence. The event is part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Join the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for a tie dye event 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the John Bardo Center Courtyard. Participants will receive a free SWE T-shirts to tie dye and yard games will also be available. For more information, contact swe@wichit.edu.

In recognition of 9/11, Wichita State’s Military and Veteran Services is encouraging all to pause in remembrance of the lives lost on this day and attend a 9/11 Memorial Event at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Rose Hill (421 E. Rocket Drive). There will also be a 9/11 Remembrance Banner available for students, faculty and staff to sign at WSU’s Military and Veteran Services Center all day Sept. 9.

Fine Arts Career Mixer 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Thursday, September 15, in the McKnight Art Center.

Faculty and staff are invited to the Shocker Career Accelerator’s (SCA) Fine Arts Career Mixer 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 at the McKnight Art Center atrium. This event is a networking/mentoring event for students to learn about local artists’ career journeys and opportunities available in their degree paths.

For the event, SCA tracks student attendance and can provide all faculty this information to provide extra credit for their students.

NBA star and Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal will join Shocker Nation at a Hoop 4 Literacy event beginning 6-9 p.m. Sept. 10 at Charles Koch Arena. This is a ticketed event. Tickets can be purchased here.

Earlier in the day, President Rick Muma will read “Shaq and the Beanstalk,” part of “Shaq and the Beanstalk and Other Tall Tales” at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Koch Arena. This event is free and open to the public.

Both events are part of Storytime Village’s Kansas Literacy Festival: Literacy Through the Arts Conference Sept. 8-10.

The conference provides professional development sessions to early childhood educators, pre-service teachers, community members and parents with opportunities to explore arts integration communities. Meet employers and other individuals within the creative world at the Shocker Career Accelerator’s *(SCA) Fine Arts Career Mixer 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the McKnight Art Center lobby. During the event, students can also also about any full-time, part-time, or internship positions are available within the community.

Representatives attending this event will include those from creative fields such as art, graphic design, entertainment, gaming, creative writing, theater and music. Registration is required to attend the event.

Engage ICT. The State of Incarceration. September 13.

This September edition of Engage ICT is taking a deep dive into many of the issues relating to incarceration in the community and around the state. This will include discussions at noon each Thursday in September at Engage ICT Mini series website, as well as a full Engage ICT panel discussion at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The 2022 Micheal Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism will take place Oct. 6-7 at Washburn University. The theme for this year’s event will be “After Brown v Board, No Turning Back: The Future of Diversity and Multiculturalism.”

The conference provides an opportunity for those involved in education, in collaboration with community business leaders, to examine diversity in education and business by discussing the challenges and opportunities including:

  • Inspire awareness of multiple dimensions of diversity, related practices of inclusion and the transformation of education.
  • Participate in workshops to learn about challenges and strategies for teaching diverse populations on campuses and in classrooms.
  • Share your passion for teaching and interacting with students from all backgrounds.
  • Reinforce the integration of multiple dimensions of diversity into student academic and personal development components.
  • Explore how these strategies and practices translate into our businesses and broader communities

Students, faculty and staff are invited to the fall 2022 Academic Convocation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at Wilner Auditorium. Doors will open at 9 a.m. Academic Convocation is the official academic welcome for all first-year students. This event celebrates new Shockers’ entry into higher education and inducts them into a community of learners.

This event is free and open to the entire campus community.

This event will feature director of Engagement Naquela Pack, the speaker pro-tempore of the Student Senate and Underserved Senator Gregory VanDyke Jr., and keynote speaker Kwame Onwuachi, author of the 2022 Common Read book “Notes from a Young Black Chef.”

All 2022 University Faculty Award winners will also be recognized at the event. A reception and book signing will immediately follow at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Ulrich Museum of Art gallery, with an informal question-and-answer session with Onwuachi at 11:30 a.m. at Shocker Dining Hall.
