Not sure how to begin a research project or thesis? WSU Libraries invites students to attend its workshop, “Writing an Awesome Literature Review.” It will show participants all the tips and tricks they need to get started. The workshop takes place from 3 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 8 in 217 Ablah Library and on Zoom.

Dr. Nina Kraus will discuss her research demonstrating how the sound people interact with impacts their brains throughout their lifespan with a particular focus on how it impacts them as they age.

This event is co-sponsored by the Women of Wichita State University and the Regional Institute on Aging, and it will begin at 4 p.m. Feb. 23 in 107 McKinley Hall, with a reception following at 5 p.m. in 102 McKinley Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Hippodrome is a celebration of the arts and features the creative talents of Shockers.

Students interested in participating in Hippodrome can do so by either creating a skit, showcasing a talent or emceeing the show. This year, Hippodrome will feature these performances in the skit and talent competition at 7 p.m. on March 31 in the CAC Theater. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 6.

Groups participating in the skit competition will perform a 15 to 20 minute scripted performance with the use of this year’s theme: Superheroes. The top three winners of the skit competition will receive awards for first, second and third place, as well as individual awards for best actor, best use of mystery item and spirit.

The talent competition will be hosted in conjunction with the skit competition. Performers will take the stage between skit performances, and first, second and third place winners will take home cash prizes up to $150.

Hippodrome competitors and performers must be current WSU students.

Tanvir Arfi, founder, chairman and CEO of Banyan Technologies Group, will provide a keynote presentation, “Future of Human Mobility: Electric Vehicles, Autonomous Vehicles and Emerging Technologies,” as part of the James Schwartz Lecture Series.

The keynote event will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Woolsey Hall auditorium.

Doors open at 10:45 a.m. All are welcome to attend the event.

The African American Faculty and Staff Association (AAFSA) calls on all faculty and staff of color at Wichita State looking to get connected on campus to join its next meeting at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 in 265 Rhatigan Student Center.

Its bi-monthly meetings allow AAFSA to keep up-to-date with current topics important to those the group represents. Participants are encouraged to share their voices and join the group as it strives to make a difference on- and off-campus.

Wichita State’s Math Circle resumes meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 at 372 Jabara Hall. Math Circle is a program for middle school students that helps keep young people interested in mathematics and lets them explore and enjoy new topics. Fifth- through ninth-graders of WSU faculty and staff are invited to attend.

The group will not meet during Spring Break. The last meeting of the spring semester will take place April 23.

Students are invited to join a meeting of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31 in 331 John Bardo Center. At the meeting, participants can learn more about the organization and participate in a fun toothpick tower building competition to win prizes.

All majors are welcome and do not need to be current members of the organization to come.

Abstract submissions for the Capitol Graduate Research Summit in Topeka closes on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Graduate students have the opportunity to showcase their research with other students from all around the state.

Come with a partner or individually and learn the basics of ballroom dancing. Piper Herrington, a WSU alum, will guide the class in styles such as waltz and Latin rumba at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the Heskett Center.
