WSU faculty and staff are invited to the Grand Opening Celebration of Woolsey Hall at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Woolsey Hall.

During the event, special remarks from President Rick Muma, WSU Foundation President Elizabeth King, Barton School of Business Dean Larisa Genin and other notable speakers will be broadcast via a YouTube livestream.

Following the remarks, an open house will take place until 4 p.m.

The next physics seminar will take place at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 via Zoom. The seminar will feature two speakers, Dr. Saradindu Samanta and Matteo Vincenzi. Samanta will give a talk titled “Spectroscopy of The Nuclei Around Doubly Magic 56NI Core,” while Matteo Vincenzi’s talk is entitled “A GRAIN of SAND for DUNE:  A Novel UV Camera Concept for Liquid Argon.”

Co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Positive Direction and Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes, Pee for Pizza occurs twice a month through the fall and spring semesters and is by reservation only. No walk-ins will be accepted. Participants must not use the restroom at least one hour before testing.

The next “Life of an Entrepreneur” startup speaker series will take place 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Devlin Hall. The event covers the topics of Work/Life Balance, Priorities and Burnout as an entrepreneur. This event is free to attend and offers participants a place ask any questions they may be curious about.

The upcoming speaker, Marquetta Atkins, executive director of Destination Innovation Inc., strives to eliminate the barriers facing young people and women as entrepreneurs. Atkins is creator of the Women Entrepreneurs of Kansas (WeKan!) and is a member of the Entrepreneurship Task Force and the Evergreen Curriculum Committee. She also sits on the Juneteenth committee and serves on the Innovation Committee at Wichita State University.

Attendance for the event is free, but registration is required.

The third annual Innovation Works Competition will take place beginnning at Oct. 21-23. The competition is a partnership between Wichita State, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and NASA in Kansas and offers a fast-paced and challenging student competition with cash prizes.

Through the qualifying phase, teams of three to four students create a one-minute video about a qualification theme that describes an innovative solution to a real-world problem or scenario. The top 12 teams will be selected to compete in the weekend phase of the competition. 

The weekend competition theme will be announced during the opening session Friday, Oct. 21. the teams will then check during the next 48 hours with short presentations about their problem understanding, focus area, initial solution and offer a refined solution.

To enter the competition, student teams must create a one-minute video and submit register for the competition by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. For more information including rules and qualifications, visit the competition page below.

Rewind to the 1920s with Wichita State’s Student Activities Council (SAC) for a Murder Mystery Dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Beggs Ballroom, located on the third floor of the Rhatigan Student Center. The event will include a three-course dinner. Registration is required to attend and closes Oct.16. Tickets are $8 for students, $15 for faculty and staff and $20 for general attendance.

President Rick Muma will host three town halls at three separate times today, Sept. 23, via Zoom. The times and groups include the following:

  • College of Applied Studies — 10-11 a.m.
  • College of Health Professions — 1-2 p.m.
  • College of Engineering — 3:30-4:40 p.m.

Students, faculty, staff and campus innovation partners are invtited to register for the second annual Suspenders4Hope 5k and 1-Mile walk beginning at 8 a.m. Oct.1 at the Steve Clark YMCA. The event benefits StopSuicideICT, and is presented by Ascension Via Christi and the Steve Clark YMCA.

Registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. Following the race, there will be presentations by several speakers and awards will be given. This part of the event will be hosted by Annette Lawless. The event will conclude with a 1-Mile Memorial Walk in honor of those who lost their lives to suicide.

On behalf of the Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU), Asian Student Conference presents the MAASUx: “Lost in Translation” conference  beginning at 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 12 at Woolsey Hall. The day will include social activities, networking opportunities, a leadership development and cultural discovery.

The theme for the conference is a reference to how Asian American students often feel lost in between their rich cultural background and their current lifestyles. It also encompasses the struggles that Asian Americans face in their attempts to connect to their own heritage and surrounding community.

The even is free to students but slots are limited to 50. Registration begins at midnight Sunday, Sept. 25.
