The W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University has launched its Executive-in-Residence program. This program will provide Barton School students, faculty and the Wichita community with vital perspectives and knowledge from industry leaders. Tom Gentile, president and CEO of Spirit AeroSystems, will serve as the program’s first resident for the fall 2021 semester.

“The wisdom of industry leaders is so vast and inspirational,” said Dr. Larisa Genin, dean of the Barton School of Business at Wichita State. “This program will tap into that knowledge. We’re honored to have Spirit AeroSystems CEO Tom Gentile as our first resident. His insights will be an unprecedented and valuable resource to our students and faculty.”

The comments from the SPTE-R for fall 2020 and spring 2021 early sessions have been mailed. The departments should receive them early next week. Check with your department’s administrator if you have been waiting on these comments.

Perpectives: Reestablishing Reality
Holding on to a particular narrative is related to holding on to power. What truth do you accept?
2 p.m., Wednesdays, April 7-May 5 www.wichita.edu/reality

People often appeal to science as an antidote of sorts to propaganda and misinformation, as well as to individual biases and politically motivated interpretations. Yet the history of science and current practice reveals that scientific work involves not just logic and mathematics, but narratives, too — and models, interpretation of images, and analogical reasoning. Are these not ever likewise susceptible to faulty stereotypes, neglect of relevant observations, and biases in interpretation? If not, why not? If so, what can be done?

Susan G. Sterrett, Curtis D. Gridley Distinguished Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, will present the last talk in this five-week series at 2 p.m. May 5. For Zoom information, go to www.wichita.edu/reality.

All videos of the series will appear on the Fairmount College YouTube channel in May.

As of today, Strategic Communications has switched to the updated format of Shocker Blast. You might not notice much difference, but read below to learn more about some upgraded features.

Improvements to the updated format:

  • Those who submit items to the newsletters will now have more control over the content-creation process, including being able to add links, bullet points and notes to the Strategic Communications staff. See above to watch a short video on how to submit.
  • Each submission to the newsletter will now live on its own web page, so you can share your own submission with whomever you want.
  • Each headline in the daily newsletter email will be clickable, taking you to that item in the web version of the newsletter.
  • For us here in Strategic Communications, these changes will allow us to greatly streamline the newsletter process and decrease errors.

What else do you need to know?

  • There is now a new link to submit to newsletters: news.wichita.edu. Click “Submit a News Item” to begin. We suggest you bookmark this link for future use. If you forget and submit to the old link instead, don’t worry; Strategic Communications will still receive your submission.
  • You do not need to do anything for previously submitted items. Those are being transferred to the new system.
  • Once we launch, you can view the old newsletters at wichita.edu/wsutodayarchive and wichita.edu/shockerblastarchive. The existing links (wichita.edu/wsutoday and wichita.edu/shockerblast) will then be redirected to the new newsletters.

For more information about how to use the new form submission link, or to submit feedback or questions, email sara.ornelas@wichita.edu or lainie.mazzullo@wichita.edu.
