Experience the traditions, activities and performances to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year: Year of the Rabbit is a celebration that starts with the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar and continues until the first full moon.

For many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year is a celebration of change, a moment to renew oneself and a time to welcome in the coming year with family and friends. This year’s celebration will start on Sunday, Jan. 22, and will be celebrated at WSU from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.

The 15th annual MLK Commemoration highlights and memorializes the work, accomplishments and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hear from Dr. Galyn Vesey, a lifelong Wichitan and civil rights activist, on his love of justice, humanity and service within the community through power and activism.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the Cadman Art Gallery in the Rhatigan Student Center at Wichita State University. The 2023 Drum Major Award recipients will also be recognized.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 16 celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate and praise the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership.

On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit. As numerous events take place to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. the Office of Diversity and Inclusion has compiled a guide of celebrations for this year’s MLK Day in the City of Wichita.

Overcome your fear of writing by attending the F1RST GEN Scholars Gettin’ Dollars Workshop, which will teach you tips and tricks on how to to write the best essay you can on your scholarship applications.

A farewell reception for Alicia Sanchez will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m today, Oct. 31 at 208 Rhatigan Student Center.

Sanchez has worked at Wichita State for more than 11 years and most recently as the director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. She will be moving onto a new job at Spirit AeroSystems as the global culture, diversity, equity and inclusion manager.

Student Government Association is proud to present the second annual Diversity Week! Diversity Week, which runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, is designed to not only increase student engagement on campus but also decrease any incidences of bias, harassment and discrimination.

Diversity Week is in partnership with several offices and student organizations and offers programs and experiences that build an inclusive culture among the student body at Wichita State University. This year’s theme is “Unity in Community,” which builds upon daily experiences that focus on cultural, religious, identity and ability diversity.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is proud to present the Diversity Lecture Series, which features distinguished leaders and experts to inspire campus dialogue, community engagement, and education about the national narrative on diversity and inclusion. An upcoming lecture will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Rhatigan Student Center, room 301.

This lecture will feature keynote speaker Alfredo Corchado, an award-winning journalist, who will share his stories from the press and expertise on immigration, drug violence and foreign policy between the United States and Mexico.

The Diversity Lecture Series is free and open to the public. Registration is required to attend.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) will close Friday, Oct. 7 to attend the 2022 Michael Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism and the 36th annual Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Conference. The office will reopen Monday, Oct. 10.
