The Office of Disability Services (ODS) will host a deaf games night from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 24 in 203 Grace Wilkie Hall.

Two members of the Wichita deaf community will be leading participants in games that are deeply rooted in deaf culture. There will be light snacks provided as well as chances to win prizes.

This is an opportunity to learn about deaf culture, practice American Sign Language and have fun. The event is open to everyone.

The Office of Disability Services is looking to recruit volunteer note takers. Emails for volunteer note takers will be sent from dsnotetaker@wichita.edu.

Disability Services has many Shockers with note taking accommodations, and note takers allow them to access classroom content more easily.

Volunteers who follow the guidelines will be provided a letter of commendation for community service including the total number of hours they volunteered.

Disability Services thanks all those who volunteer to help their fellow Shockers.

The Office of Disability Services will be hosting an ASL Bingo game night from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in 203 Grace Wilkie Hall.

Instead of using numbers, we will be using vocabulary from American Sign Language. Attending this event will earn you points in Shocker 360, expand your knowledge of deaf culture and American Sign Language, and enjoy a comfortable and safe environment to hang out with peers while having fun.

Are you looking for volunteer opportunities? Do you want to help a fellow Shocker? The Office of Disability Services is in need of note-takers for students who have disabilities that make it difficult to take notes.

At the end of the semester, the Office of Disability Services will provide volunteering students with a letter of commendation and a letter of reference. Volunteering for this service may require the student to attend an additional class. Other requirements include the following:

  • Taking a short online training on note-taking
  • Vounteers must sign a confidentiality contract
  • Setting up a OneDrive or OneNote folder and sending a link to the folder to dsnotetaker@wichita.edu
  • Uploading notes to the folder after each class meeting

Join Kelly Rawlings (Adams) in the discussion of the autobiography by Girma Haben, “The deaf-blind Woman who Conquered Harvard Law” at 6:30 p.m. April 14 at the Advanced Learning Library.

Born with deaf-blindness, Girma grew up with enough vision to know when someone was in front of her and enough hearing to know when someone close to her was talking. However, she had difficulty reading facial features or distinguishing people in group conversations. Relying on her own problem-solving skills, Girma overcame roadblocks, while simultaneously obtaining her undergraduate and then a law degree.
