Wichita State’s Graduate School invites faculty and staff to bid farewell to associate dean, Dr. Kerry Wilks at reception 2-4 p.m. today at the Rhatigan Student Center (Room 266). Wilks is departing for a new position at the University of Northern Illinois.

Do you know a graduate student working on research that directly impacts the State of Kansas? If so, encourage them to submit their abstract for the 19th annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit  (CGRS) taking place Feb. 16 at the Capitol Building in Topeka.

CGRS provides an opportunity for selected graduate students to represent Wichita State showing their research to state government, education officials, the general public and graduate students from all the Kansas Board of Regents’ research institutions. Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 10.

The Graduate School would like to congratulate the winners of the fourth Three-Minute Thesis competition which was held on Nov. 12. Fariha Tanveer, a master’s student in biological sciences, placed first with the presentation “Developing a Human Patient ‘Avatar’ System Particularly Relevant to Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC). Tanveer’s advisor was William Hendry. Tanveer will go on to represent WSU at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools’ 3MT competition this spring.

Michael Okwori, a doctoral candidate in electrical and computer engineering, was runner up with the presentation “Application of Machine Learning Models and Feature Engineering to Predict Genomic Phenomena.” Okwori’s advisor was Ali Eslami.

4th annual 3MT Competition, November 12, Showcase at 4:00 PM Rhatigan Student Center 233 Santa Fe Trail.

The Graduate School will host the fourth annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. at the Santa Fe Trail Room located in the Rhatigan Student Center. During the 3MT competition, each student will summarize the importance and impact of their research in three minutes.

The 3MT is a worldwide competition and the winner of the showcase will go on to represent Wichita State at a regional competition in spring 2022.

Gathering data, creating and testing hypotheses, and making data-based decisions are all things students learn in their programs of study; but these habits can have value well beyond the classroom and laboratory. In fact, these scientific habits of mind can support each of us in our personal lives as well.

Join the Graduate School with presenter Dr. Carolyn Speer at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in the Pike Room (266) of the RSC for “Thinking Like a Researcher in your Daily Life,” a practical session that will introduce the idea of applying the scientific method to life’s daily questions and provide you with some practical advice about how to think like a researcher to improve your own life.

Wichita State’s Graduate School and Graduate Student Council invites graduate students to join the next monthly social event 5:30-7:30 today, today, Oct. 8 at Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes.

The event will include billiards and darts with members of the school and council. Students who check-in will receive a drink ticket.

Join the Wichita State’ Graduate School and Shocker Career Accelerator for tips on how to write the curriculum vitae (CV) at its virtual CV Workshop: How to Create a Strong CV at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22 via Zoom.

The CV provides a detailed overview of your academic and professional history and is a standard document required by applications for  graduate school, postdocs, faculty positions, and other academic positions. The purpose of a CV is to summarize your relevant professional experiences and accomplishments. Learn how to write a strong CV at this workshop.

Join Dr. Coleen Pugh, Wichita State Graduate School dean and research associate vice president, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Rhatigan Student Center (room 266) for tips on how to craft a competitive National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP).

The NSF-GRFP is one of the most prestigious programs to recognize and support outstanding graduate students. The grant is available to first-year domestic graduate students and undergraduate seniors in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline who pursue a research-based master’s or doctoral degree.
