WSU featured by APLU as Innovation & Economic Prosperity University Awards finalist

The Association of Public & Land-grant Universities (APLU) featured Wichita State as one of the finalists for its Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Awards.

The APLU highlighted the benefits WSU’s Innovation Campus provides to both students and industry, and some new expansions coming. The IEP Award winners will be announced at the APLU’s annual meeting Nov 12-24 in Seattle, Washington.

Engineering students create special plaques for Memorial ’70 ceremony

Utilizing the Innovation Hub in the John Bardo Center, College of Engineering students created approximately 70 plaques for the Memorial ’70 ceremony held Oct. 2 at the memorial site on campus. The annual ceremony of remembrance occurs every year to honor WSU football players, administrators and supporters who died in the plane crash Oct. 2, 1970.

At this year’s ceremony, attendees such as survivors and loved ones of the former football players, were gifted with the plaques. The plaques are composed of salvaged aluminum seating from the east side of Cessna Stadium, the same stadium where the WSU football team practiced and played from the 1940s until the 1980s, as well as stained oak wood. Within a few days, the students participated in prototyping, testing and producing 140 parts and laser etching approximately 70 aluminum plaques.

Cybersecurity virtual contest draws participants from across the country

In September, teams from 16 high schools and two-year colleges competed in the inaugural Capture The Wu event, a two-day virtual contest in which teams solve cybersecurity challenges. Wichita State students from the Wichita State Linux User Group (WULUG) and Joe Jabara, the director of the cybersecurity program in the School of Computing, organized and ran the contest.

Winning teams in the high school division were from Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, Eisenhower High School in Goddard and Tuscaloosa Academy in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, while Garden City Community College won the two-year college division.

Wichita Ceramic National Exhibition supports Empty Bowls fundraiser

Visit the Reuben Saunders Gallery, 3215 E. Douglas Ave., in October to experience a thoughtful variety of built and thrown clay works juried by ceramicist Chotsani Elaine Dean in support of the Empty Bowls fundraiser to benefit HumanKind Ministries and the ICT Community Fridge Project.

The Empty Bowls Chili Cook-Off fundraiser, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 21 in Woolsey Hall, is presented by Empty Bowls Wichita with support from the Ulrich Museum of Art, WSU School of Art, Design and Creative Industries, and the WSU Ceramics Guild.

Learn the history of Wichita State, Fairmount Neighborhood with walking tour

Join Wichita State’s Community Education for an adventure through time right in the neighborhood during the Historic Walking Tour of the Fairmount Neighborhood from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21.

Participants will meet at Social Tap at Braeburn Square. Jay Price, professor in the Department of History, will be the instructor for the tour.

The Fairmount Neighborhood is more than just a place; it’s a treasure trove of history that’s been intertwined with WSU for over 125 years.

During this tour, participants will explore the Victorian elegance of Fairmount Cottage; step into the Innovation Campus’s modern, 21st-century urban environment; uncover the intriguing history of the Old Frisco Railway, also known as the Redbud Trail; pay a visit to local cemeteries, each holding tales of days gone by; and discover WSU’s historic hangouts and why they’re so special.
