Wichita State students and faculty have access to a wide range of computational resources, locally and through regional and national partnerships. Make the most of these powerful tools to boost your research and projects at no cost.

Local resources

  • BeoShock – Wichita State: The BeoShock High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster at WSU provides computational resources to students and faculty, as well as KBOR constituents outside of WSU. To request an HPC account, visit the HPC user access request page. For further information, visit the HPC website or contact the HPC director at WSU, Dr. Terrance Figy, at terrance.figy@wichita.edu.
  • Ryan Doll and Terrance Figy via Award Abstract #2346097, “CC* Planning: Establishing a Sustainable Framework for High-Performance Computing Growth at Wichita State University,” are formulating plans for the next generation of advanced computing resources. If you would like to be involved or have opinions, contact either Terrance Figy (terrance.figy@wichita.edu) or Ryan Doll (ryan.doll@wichita.edu).

Regional resources

  • Pete – Oklahoma State University: The Pete Supercomputer at Oklahoma State University offers advanced computational resources and data storage, accessible to students and faculty at WSU to support diverse research initiatives.
  • New Computing Resource Coming Soon!
This is an outcome of a collaborative effort among Wichita State University, Oklahoma State University and six other institutions in the OAK region, resulting in the MRI award for the “Acquisition of a High-Performance Computational System for OAK Region to Enable Computing and Data-Driven Discovery.”
  • BeoCat – Kansas State University: Beocat, a high-performance computing cluster at Kansas State University operated by the Institute for Computational Research, offers free access to any educational researcher in Kansas and their collaborators.

National resources

  • Open Science Grid: The Open Science Grid facilitates high-throughput computing, enabling the parallel execution of numerous tasks or simulations that demand substantial computational resources over extended periods.
  • ACCESS: ACCESS (Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support) supports computational- and data-intensive research with resources like HPC clusters, virtualization clusters and massive storage clusters. For account creation and resource information, contact Campus Champion Dr. Terrance Figy at terrance.figy@wichita.edu.
  • NRP: The National Research Platform (NRP) is a heterogeneous, nationally distributed, open system that includes different types of processors: standard CPUs, GPUs optimized for different precision levels and FPGAs. It has two types of setups at three locations: one for high-performance tasks and two optimized for specific types of GPUs. This setup supports various tasks like data science, simulations and machine learning or AI. It also allows easy data access through a large, connected network that shares content across the country.

We are keeping the families and loved ones of those affected by the devasting plane crash in Washington, D.C. in our thoughts. As a close-knit community, this incident has shaken the entire Shocker community.

We want to remind students that they have numerous support systems available as members of our community.

  • You can schedule an appointment with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). It offers individual and group therapy, and no student will be turned away for the inability to pay. Learn more and schedule an appointment.
  • The CARE Team offers proactive support to the entire Shocker community. If you or someone you know is struggling during this time, you can submit a concern at: wsu.news/careteamreporting
  • Student Health Services can help a number of physical and mental health related issues that can result from difficult situations, such as treat acute symptoms like headaches, prescribe mental health medications after consultation with CAPS and more.

After such tragedies, it is more important than ever to come together and support your fellow peers.

As we learn more about the tragic Jan. 29 plane crash, we know the profound effect it has had on many in Wichita, including our campus. As a close-knit community, this hits especially close to home. As Shockers, we all need to support each other.

We also want faculty and staff to know that there are resources available to support you through these difficult times.

During times like this, it is more important than ever to lean on your colleagues.

This is a reminder for all students, faculty and staff to send out surveys with Qualtrics. Wichita State has a license for Qualtrics, which became the official institutional survey software in 2012.

Qualtrics can be used for research purposes, program review, nominations, elections, applications and more.

Listed below are some of the benefits of using Qualtrics for your survey needs:

  • The program reduces overall cost as the university has a site license for Qualtrics, so users do not have to pay any other third-party vendor.
  • There is access to the Qualtrics Support Site to help users with survey design, methodology and survey questions.
  • Members have access to on-campus survey experts to optimize their survey and response rate.
  • Qualtrics ensures that users get accurate email lists of students, faculty and staff for their survey.
  • Qualtrics reduces survey fatigue as it can create reduced samples that more approximately target your survey population.
  • Qualtrics sends reminders, follow-ups and thank you emails to survey recipients.
  • Users can view analytics of create reports, including filtered results within Qualtrics.
  • Users can avoid getting marked as a spammer by sending surveys through Qualtrics rather than through their myWSU email.
  • Users can create surveys with embedded video, audio and graphics.
  • Users can create surveys that only show appropriate questions to each user using skip logic and survey flow.
  • Users can export data directly to SPSS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV or PDF format.

If you need an account, would like training or have questions, contact Whitney Crager, Office of Planning and Analysis, at 316-978-5350 or at whitney.crager@wichita.edu.

Open-source textbooks increase engagement and satisfaction for students, while reducing the financial burden of college. At WSU, you can have your course designated as either OAT-Z (zero cost) or OAT-L (low cost of $50 or less) under our Open / Alternative Textbook Initiative, which gives your course visibility to students in the schedule as an OAT course.

Open-source course materials include:

  • Open-access textbook
  • Library resources
  • Open educational materials
  • Multimedia resources
  • Faculty-authored materials

For more information on OAT courses and materials, please visit the Open / Alternative Textbook Initiative, where you can also access the OAT course designation request forms.

The deadline to submit OAT designation request forms for spring is Monday, Sept. 30.
