Wichita State’s Military and Veterans Services, located on the third floor of the Shocker Success Center, proudly joins the nation in celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States Navy. A momentous milestone honoring two and a half centuries of service, innovation and commitment to defending our nation’s freedom.

Founded on October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established the Navy to protect America’s interests at sea during the Revolutionary War. Since then, it has grown into a global force dedicated to security, humanitarian assistance and technological advancement. The milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the Navy’s enduring legacy and the dedication of those who have served and continue to serve at sea and around the world. Many Shockers, past and present, have served proudly in the Navy and continue to contribute to campus and society through their experiences and leadership.

Military and Veterans Services encourages everyone to join in recognizing the occasion and extending appreciation to those who have served or continue to serve in the United States Navy. Their dedication and sacrifice exemplify the strength of the nation and the values upheld at Wichita State. Military and Veterans Services is always available in 318 Shocker Success Center. Each year on Sept. 11, the nation pauses to remember the tragic events of 2001, a day forever etched in American history. Patriot Day serves as both a solemn remembrance and a testament to the strength and unity of the American people.

On that morning, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. Yet in the face of devastation, countless acts of bravery and compassion shone through — first responders rushing into danger, citizens helping strangers and communities coming together in solidarity.

Patriot Day is not only about remembering those lost, but also about honoring the resilience of the country. Each year, Americans are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the Twin Towers, and to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff.

As America reflects on Sept. 11, let us honor the memory of those who perished, pay tribute to the heroes who rose that day, and recommit ourselves to the ideals of freedom and unity that define our nation.

On June 14, Military and Veterans Services at Wichita State proudly celebrates the 250th birthday of the United States Army — a quarter-millennium of unwavering service, sacrifice and strength.

Since its founding in 1775, the U.S. Army has stood as the backbone of our nation’s defense, answering the call of duty in every generation with honor and courage. Today, Military and Veterans Services reflects on the legacy of those who have worn the uniform, past and present. To all who serve and have served — thank you. Your commitment inspires a nation.

Military and Veterans Services is always available on the third floor of the Shocker Success Center, room 318. Learn more about Military and Veterans Services on the website (wichita.edu/military). For questions, you can email veterans.services@wichita.edu or call 316-978-3207.

Memorial Day is more than just a three day weekend. It is a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for our Nation’s freedom. This Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, Military and Veterans Services asks everyone to take a pause to remember the fallen who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

It began as Decoration Day in the 1860’s when families decorated the graves of their loved ones lost in the Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to honor those lost in all wars and became a federal holiday In 1971.

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” – President Harry S. Truman
