The Wichita State Public Policy and Management Center (PPMC) is helping the Kansas Office of Broadband Development (KOBD) put on its Kansas Broadband Roadshow from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at the Evergreen Community Center and Library, 2601 N. Arkansas Ave., in the Cirilo Arteaga Room.

KOBD wants participants to share their thoughts on internet connectivity in their neighborhoods to help it build the future of Internet in Kansas.

It hopes to hear more about the following from the participants:

• Internet access and availability
• Public Internet access
• Inclusive design
• Internet speeds
• Online safety and privacy
• Digital skills training
• Devices and more

Join the Department of Physics for its next seminar at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 in 226 Jabara Hall and also on Zoom.

The speaker for the seminar is Abdelghani Laraoui, assistant professor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering.

Join the Shockers Vote Coalition for the second Midwest Student Voting Summit. The summit will be held virtually from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 24. It will be an opportunity to come together with fellow students, staff, faculty, administrators and non-partisan campus partners to strategize on getting out the youth vote.

All WSU students, faculty and staff are welcome to participate. The conference is virtual, and attendees may join on their own or they can participate with fellow Shockers from the Shockers Vote Coalition in 240 Rhatigan Student Center. Following the conference, there will be time to debrief and talk about next steps for the Shockers Vote initiative and about ways to get involved. Lunch will be provided.

The Department of Women’s, Ethnicity and Intersectional Studies (WEIS), in sponsorship with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, will convene the eighth annual Diverse Women’s Summit, with events scheduled starting 9 a.m. Monday, March 20 in the Beggs Ballroom, 305 Rhatigan Student Center.

The event is free and open to the public. The following is the list of scheduled events:

• Student Showcase: 9:00 a.m.-noon. Presentations of papers, art, posters and other projects by students and other participants.
• Creative Concourse: 1-4 p.m. Poetry, skits, stories and other presentations by community members, students and other participants.
• International Women’s Day Keynote Speech: 7-8:30 p.m. The speech will discuss the 2022 theme, “Intersectionality at Wichita State University–Prospects and Perspectives.”

The high school class of 2023 will join Shocker Nation soon. Join the Retention Faculty Fellows for lunch and a conversation about incoming freshmen students during its Teaching Matters series at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 7 in 142 Rhatigan Student Center.

Local high school teachers will share what they have observed about the effects the pandemic has had on the class of 2023 to prepare faculty to meet the students where they are. Panelists for the event are Melissa Buteyn, Northwest High School; Mike Harris, Southeast High School; and Shelly Salley, East High School.

Gov. Laura Kelly has declared March 22 as Graduate Student Research Day. To celebrate the day, eight Wichita State graduate students will travel to Topeka to share their findings with legislators, the Kansas Board of Regents, industry representatives and other attendees.

In total, 45 graduate students from six Kansas public universities will showcase their research, compete for prizes and share how their research contributes to the economic development of the state. The 20th annual Graduate Research Summit is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, in the Capitol Rotunda in Topeka. The summit is free and open to the public and campus community is invited to attend.

The Philosophy Department’s Distinguished Speaker presents Dr. Deborah Boyle, professor of philosophy at the College of Charleston. Boyle will host two talks on 19th century Scottish women philosophers:

• 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, March 23 in 100 Lindquist Hall: “Mary Shepherd’s Causal Principles and Divine Causation.”
• 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, March 24 in 100 Lindquist Hall: “Sympathetic Curiosity: Joanna Baillie’s Account and Elizabeth Hamilton’s Critique.”

On Friday, April 21, the Office of Admissions will host the last Black & Yellow Day of the semester. Each semester, it invites high school juniors, seniors and college transfer students to this all-day event on campus where they have the chance to participate in sessions hosted by each academic college, tour campus and explore the hands-on learning opportunities available at WSU.
