The next WSU physics seminar is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in 128 Jabara Hall and on Zoom.

This talk will feature Stanley Fricke, director of medical physics and a professor at Georgetown University. He will speak on “Medical Physics, What does a Physicist do in a Hospital?”

A farewell reception for Alicia Sanchez will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m today, Oct. 31 at 208 Rhatigan Student Center.

Sanchez has worked at Wichita State for more than 11 years and most recently as the director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. She will be moving onto a new job at Spirit AeroSystems as the global culture, diversity, equity and inclusion manager.

Dr. Rajendra Singh — D. Houser Banks professor of electrical, computer engineering, and automotive engineering at Clemson University — will discuss the transformative research opportunities that remain to be solved in every major area of engineering and business.

Singh’s presentation, “Transformative Role of Solar Generated Sustainable Electrical Power in Global Economic Growth and World Peace,” will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8 in 104 Jabara Hall.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to the fifth annual Kansas Project Management Summit 2022 co-hosted by the WSU ITS and Kansas State PMO Office. This year’s theme is Security and Cybercrime around Projects.

The event is held virtually from 8:30 a.m. to noon  Thursday, Nov. 10. This event is free for all attendees.

Join University Libraries for the next Savvy Scholar Workshop — Writing an Awesome Literature Review — from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 via Zoom.

Attendees will learn all the steps to create a literature review, from conducting comprehensive research to synthesizing perspectives to presenting your findings.

Basil Hourani; Navin Thukkaram

Basil Hourani — co-founder and executive partner at Capital7 and the fall 2022 Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the W. Frank Barton School of Business — will provide a keynote presentation, along with Navin Thukkaram — lead investor at Skykick and founder of NT Capital — as part of the James Schwartz Lecture Series, “Lessons learned from $3 billion in exits.”

The keynote event is at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the Woolsey Hall Auditorium.

KMUW’s monthly book club features selections made by KMUW staff. For November, we’re reading “How Civil Wars Start” by Barbara F. Walter. There will be a group discussion, dinner and drinks from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Public at the Brickyard, 129 N. Rock Island Ave. in Wichita.

In the book, Walter — a leading political scientist — examines the dramatic rise in violent extremism around the globe and sounds the alarm on the increasing likelihood of a second civil war in the United States.

Gamefest. Thursday, November 17, 2022. 5pm-10pm in the Heskett Center Esports Hub. The games played will be Smash Ultimate at 5:30, Madden at 5:30, Chess at 6, Rocket League at 7, and NBA2k at 8. 1st and 2nd place awarded in each game. Refreshments provided, register in advance. Co-sponsored with Campus Activities & Recreation & Shocker Esports.

Gamefest registration is now open. The competition will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 in the Heskett Center Esports Club.

Gamefest features back-to-back tournaments in a variety of styles, including board game, PC and console tournaments throughout the evening. The current lineup of games includes Smash Bros. Ultimate, Madden NFL, NBA2k, Rocket League and Chess. All games will be single-elimination. Participants can bring their own controllers and DS.

Registration is required and must be completed by 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16. This event is in collaboration with the Student Activities Council, Intramural Sports and Shocker Esports. Pizza and snacks will be provided. Prizes and intramural champion shirts will be awarded to the top two performing players form each tournament.

Deniz Berfin Karakoc, a Ph.D. student from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will speak as part of the Disaster Resilience Analytics Center Seminar Series from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 via Zoom.

In Karakoc’s work, she studies the restoration planning of critical interdependent infrastructure networks after a disruptive event by emphasizing the social vulnerability indices of interacting socially.

Karakoc earned her master’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Oklahoma, and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Bilkent University in Turkey. Deniz is currently a Ph.D. student in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
