The Student Activities Council is hosting the second annual Fairmount Formal from 7 to 10 p.m. on Feb. 11 in the Beggs Ballroom on the third floor of the RSC. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join in for dancing and light snacks.

Formal attire is encouraged, but not required. Registration for the event will be open until Feb. 10. Tickets are free for WSU students, $5 for WSU staff and faculty and $8 for general admission. For more information, email sac@wichita.edu.

Black Excellence will bring the MASTERCLASS Professional Development Workshop series to students at WSU. These workshops were designed to support the development of leadership and professional skills. The next workshop will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in 208 Rhatigan Student Center.

The upcoming workshop will cover cultural restoration and aims to educate and empower participants by exploring the rich history of the Black and African American communities. It will also engage participants in meaningful dialogue and activities around unique facets of culture.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites students, staff, faculty and community members to make its office their home away from home. Stop by its office from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 2 in 208 Rhatigan Student Center for light refreshments and to learn more about available resources and programs.

Experience the traditions, activities and performances to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year: Year of the Rabbit is a celebration that starts with the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar and continues until the first full moon.

For many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year is a celebration of change, a moment to renew oneself and a time to welcome in the coming year with family and friends. This year’s celebration will start on Sunday, Jan. 22, and will be celebrated at WSU from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Student Activities Council’s comedy show with Hayden Kristal has been postponed. SAC looks forward to hosting this event in the future.

The Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is hosting the North American Computational Linguistics Open Competition for middle school and high school students on Thursday, Jan. 26. This event is free and open to all.

Join Trish Higgins, gallerist and curator, for a tour of the works on display in Woolsey Hall, WSU’s newest academic building and home of the W. Frank Barton School of Business, on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Explore a variety of paintings, sculptures and other media by local and regional artists of all ages. Refreshments will be available starting at 10 a.m., and the tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. The tour is presented by the Ulrich Museum of Art.

Join us for Teaching Matters Series: February 3 at 11:30 am via Zoom, March 3 at 11:30 am in RSC 261, and April 7 at 11:30 am in RSC 233, "Let us count the ways we love transfer students" with heart and WSU logo.

The Retention Fellows will continue hosting its Teaching Matters series this semester. All faculty, instructors, teaching assistants and students are invited to participate in conversations designed to enhance and improve teaching and learning at WSU.

Its first event will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3 via Zoom, and it will focus on how to support transfer student transitions and success.

Zach Gearhart, chief of staff, will update faculty and staff on legislative issues raised related to Wichita State from the Kansas state government.

The meeting is open to all faculty and staff at 9 a.m. every other Friday in the Morrison Hall board room. The first meeting is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13.

New graduate students are invited to attend two orientation events Thursday, Jan. 11 in 305/306 Rhatigan Student Center, Beggs Ballroom.

  • Grad Life 101, also know as the “unofficial orientation,” is a peer-to-peer session where incoming students can ask members of the Graduate Student Council about grad life at WSU from 1 to 2 p.m.
  • After this session, the Graduate School will host a graduate orientation refresher, with information on Graduate School basic regulations and services to grad students, from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
