National Engineers Week

To celebrate National Engineers Week (Feb. 19-24), the College of Engineering is hosting multiple student-focused events, as well as a public event. Students are invited to attend each of the events listed below, as well as to bring family members to the Cosmic Bowling Night and to invite friends and family to participate in the public Wichita State Engineering 5k run/walk. In addition to the events listed below, there will be a Golden Calculator Search with clues announced daily via the college’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Winners of the search will receive up to $40 of WSU merchandise from the WSU Bookstore.

National Engineers Week

College staff and faculty are encouraged to attend the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” event featuring various faculty members and the family-friendly Cosmic Bowling Night. Additionally, students, staff, faculty and community members are encouraged to participate in the public Wichita State Engineering 5k run/walk. The mixer follows the Promoting Equity through Assessment Workshop from 3 to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29 in 261 Rhatigan Student Center or via Zoom facilitated by Barbara Glesner Fines, dean emerita of the UMKC Law School. RSVP to attend the workshop that will explore teaching that respects diverse ways of knowing and communicates high expectations for student learning​.

The Student Activities Council, Black Student Union and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will celebrate Black History Month with a special maker’s market dedicated to showcasing Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in the Wichita community.

Shop at the market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 and Wednesday, Feb. 21 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center to celebrate and promote the talented vendors.

Visiting author Brian Turner will read from his new trilogy of poetry books as part of the Writing Now Reading Now series at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Ulrich Museum of Art in the Dr. Sam & Jacqui Kouri Collection Study Center.

Writer of the memoir, “My Life as a Foreign Country,” Turner has penned five collections of poetry. He’s the editor of The Kiss and co-edited The Strangest of Theatres and lives in Florida with his dog, Dene.

Writing Now Reading Now is cosponsored by the Department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Watermark Books & Café and the Ulrich Museum. This event is open to everyone. A reception will be hosted starting at 5:30 p.m.

Celebrate love and creativity this Valentine’s Day at the new Makers & Masterpieces series from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the Ulrich Museum of Art.

Learn the printmaking process using linoleum blocks to create a card for someone you love with the help of WSU’s Tornado Alley Press. Take a photo with the Robert Indiana “LOVE” sculpture. Enjoy sweet and savory snacks and hot cocoa sponsored by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. Enjoy a special viewing of love themed artworks in the Dr. Sam & Jacqui Kouri Collection Study Center. Purchase roses and handmade ceramics from these student organizations, Arts Exploration Association and the WSU Ceramics Guild.

The Department of Anthropology will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16 in Neff Hall.

Those who have ever been interested in anthropology or wonder what it is like to major in anthropology can stop by and visit the Lowell Holmes Museum of Anthropology, the visual anthropology lab and an archaeology lab. Snacks will be available as well.

The Medical Laboratory Sciences Department is holding a virtual information session from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 via Zoom.

Those interested in learning about the medical laboratory sciences profession or have specific questions about the program can tune in to learn more.

Attendees will have a chance to learn about medical laboratory sciences as a career, the application process and chat with current faculty and students.

Valentine's With SASE. Make valentines for friends & take pictures at our photobooth! Free event. 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  Tuesday February 13th RSC 1st floor groover lounge.

The Strengths, Assessment and Staff Experiences (SASE) office will have a Valentine’s card station for students from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the Rhatigan Student Center Groover Lounge.

Come pick a card for a friend or loved one while supplies last. There will also be a Valentine’s-themed photo booth for students. While supplies last.

Pi Delta Phi is hosting a Mardi Gras bake/book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 13 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center, tables 24-26.

Come and try sandwiches, pastries, quiches and French-baked goods. The sale is sponsored by the French division of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures.
