Please join the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) for a come-and-go event featuring hors d’oeuvres and speakers celebrating Dr. Raymond (Ray) Hull at 4:30 p.m. March 22 at the Rhatigan Student Center (Room 233). During the event, Students and colleagues will be present to share stories of his time at WSU.

Hull served as a professor in the CSD department at Wichita State for 27 years before retiring in 2020. Before coming to WSU, Hull was a professor and chair of the Communication Disorders Department at Northern Colorado University. Since retiring, he continues to write books and contribute to newspaper columns.

The Ulrich Museum of Art is hosting artist Lesley Dill at 6 p.m. tonight, Feb. 15 via Zoom. The talk is part of the Ulrich’s “Voices from the Vault: The 1990s” series. Registration is free and open to the public.

Dill will deliver a visual exploration of her artistic practice, and the American visionaries, writers, artists and abolitionists who inspired her current exhibition, “Wilderness: Light Sizzles Around Me.” The “Voices from the Vault: The 1990s” series is made possible by funding from Humanities Kansas, a nonprofit cultural organization that connects communities with history, traditions and ideas to strengthen civic life.

Join KMUW’s next Engage ICT virtual event at 5 p.m. today, Feb. 15. This edition will feature a discussion about mental health and homelessness in Wichita.

The number of people experiencing homelessness in the Wichita area has increased during the last few years. This challenging issue affects many parts of the community. A panel of experts will discuss the problems and possible solutions. The panelists include:

The keynote speech for the seventh annual Diverse Women’s Summit (DWS) will take place on International Women’s Day 7-8:30 p.m. via Zoom (Zoom ID is 978 0604 0268, Passcode is 417067). The event is free and open to the public.

DWS is a meeting of individuals and groups from different backgrounds on local, regional, national and global issues affecting women. The theme of the 2022 DWS will be Intersectionality at Wichita State University. The event is sponsored by the Center for Women’s Studies, Dr. Chinyere Okafor, professor and director, the Office of Diversity Inclusion (ODI), the League of Women Voters of Wichita, the  Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). The planning committee for this event includes Okafor; Dr. Debbie Gordon; associate professor of Women’s Studies, Dr. Robin Henry; associate professor of Legal, Gender and Sexuality, American West, and Graduate Program coordinator.

The speech will include award-winning Wichita State professors who will speak about Intersectionality at the university. The following professors are scheduled to speak:

  • Dr.  Susan Castro, Fairmont College of Liberal Arts and Sciences associate professor of Philosophy and department chair, will speak on the topic of “Intersectional Ethics and Epistemology.”
  • Dr. Voncella McCleary-Jones, College of Health Professions associate dean for Academic, Faculty and Student Affairs, will speak on the topic of “The Intersection of Health, Race and Gender: Standing on the Precipice.”
  • Dr. Edil Torres Rivera, Latinx Studies and Counseling and Interventions Service and Leadership in Education (ISLE) professor, will speak on the topic of “The intersectionality of the colonial matrix of power: Gender, race, ethnicity, and power in education.”

The Office of Engagement is partnering with mama.film and Wichita State’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion during Black History Month for the SANKOFA Film Screening at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at Hubbard Hall and a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 via Facebook Live.
The events will include the following:
  • SANKOFA Film Screening: Sankofa has been described as unashamedly Afrocentric and proud…artistic, challenging and essential and an unrelenting but never exploitative portrayal of the great slave diaspora of the 18th and 19th centuries by Letterboxd. This is a free screening of the recently restored and highly lauded and moving film, originally released in 1993. There will also be a special performance by local creative Blk Sol before the screening. Learn more about Sankofa.
  • Panel discussion: Sankofa Film and Black Emancipation: After the film screening, join a conversation on Facebook Live where guests will unpack the themes in the 1993 film Sankofa. The conversation will address Black emancipation then and in the 21st Century.
