The next Savvy Scholar workshop will take place noon-1 p.m. Oct. 7 via Zoom. The workshop will discuss what systematic reviews are and are not, what makes them systematic, how you can read and interpret them, and how you can write them.

Steven Freedman, University of Kansas’ School of Law dean, will provide students with information about the law school application process, admissions and more 6-7 p.m. Nov. 2 at 262 Herman Room. The event is hosted by Wichita State’s Pre-Law Student Association. Food will be provided for this event. An RSVP is required to attend.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the College of Applied Studies (CAS) Diversity Committee is hosting a presentation titled “Liberation and Decolonized Mental Health Practices” noon-1 p.m. today, Sept. 26, via Zoom. Dr. Edil Torres Rivera — professor and Latinx Cluster coordinator and Interventions Service and Leadership in Education (ISLE) — will present during the event.

This event is a part of the CAS Diversity Committee Faculty, Staff and Community of Color Lecture Series. Registration is required to attend. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

The Department of Industrial Systems and Manufacturing Engineering (ISME) will host a talk by Sami Alami, senior manager, Deloitte Consutling Industrial Products and Construction 11 a.m.-noon Sept. 30 via Zoom.  His talk is titled “Supply Chain Materials.”

WSU faculty and staff are invited to the Grand Opening Celebration of Woolsey Hall at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Woolsey Hall.

During the event, special remarks from President Rick Muma, WSU Foundation President Elizabeth King, Barton School of Business Dean Larisa Genin and other notable speakers will be broadcast via a YouTube livestream.

Following the remarks, an open house will take place until 4 p.m.

The next physics seminar will take place at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 via Zoom. The seminar will feature two speakers, Dr. Saradindu Samanta and Matteo Vincenzi. Samanta will give a talk titled “Spectroscopy of The Nuclei Around Doubly Magic 56NI Core,” while Matteo Vincenzi’s talk is entitled “A GRAIN of SAND for DUNE:  A Novel UV Camera Concept for Liquid Argon.”

The next “Life of an Entrepreneur” startup speaker series will take place 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Devlin Hall. The event covers the topics of Work/Life Balance, Priorities and Burnout as an entrepreneur. This event is free to attend and offers participants a place ask any questions they may be curious about.

The upcoming speaker, Marquetta Atkins, executive director of Destination Innovation Inc., strives to eliminate the barriers facing young people and women as entrepreneurs. Atkins is creator of the Women Entrepreneurs of Kansas (WeKan!) and is a member of the Entrepreneurship Task Force and the Evergreen Curriculum Committee. She also sits on the Juneteenth committee and serves on the Innovation Committee at Wichita State University.

Attendance for the event is free, but registration is required.

Image of plane. Lockheed Martin 3rd Innovation Works Competition. $12,000 in student prizes. Register by October 14th.

The third annual Innovation Works Competition will take place beginnning at Oct. 21-23. The competition is a partnership between Wichita State, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and NASA in Kansas and offers a fast-paced and challenging student competition with cash prizes.

Through the qualifying phase, teams of three to four students create a one-minute video about a qualification theme that describes an innovative solution to a real-world problem or scenario. The top 12 teams will be selected to compete in the weekend phase of the competition. 

The weekend competition theme will be announced during the opening session Friday, Oct. 21. the teams will then check during the next 48 hours with short presentations about their problem understanding, focus area, initial solution and offer a refined solution.

To enter the competition, student teams must create a one-minute video and submit register for the competition by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. For more information including rules and qualifications, visit the competition page below.
