The Ulrich Museum of Art on the Wichita State University campus invites you to celebrate its latest suite of exhibitions at its Summer Exhibition Opening Party from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26.

The party is free and open to all. The two new exhibitions both feature selections from the museum’s permanent collection, though from entirely different perspectives: One is a show curated by high school students in the Wichita Arts Council, and the other features picks from the collection that are near and dear to the Ulrich staff.

Those two exhibitions, Reemergence and Reconnecting: A Youth Arts Council Takeover and Deep Dive: Selections from the Permanent Collection, will remain on display through July 30 during regular gallery hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; closed Sundays and university and major holidays. Admission is always free.

The Writing Now/Reading Now literary series invites you to celebrate the 2022 Wichita State Master of Fine Arts graduates in creative writing with a student reading at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at the Ulrich Museum of Art. There will be a reception before at 2 p.m.

During the event, Stephen Woodgeard, Robert Burke, Janet Federico, Reid Kurkerewicz, and Merrick Preti will read from their fiction. Robert Yates and Luke Ulatowski will read from their poetry.

Writing Now/Reading Now is cosponsored by the Wichita State Department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Watermark Books and Café, and the Ulrich Museum of Art.

The popular Empty Bowls Chili Cook-off has been rebranded as Bowl Fest and will take place later today 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 29 at the Groover Labs parking lot (334 St. Francis Ave). The event is hosted by Wichita State College of Fine Arts; it’s School of Art Design and Creative Industries; the Wichita School District; Wichita East High School Ceramics Club; Spirit AeroSystems and Groover Labs.

The event will feature a collection of bowls for sale made by local and regional artists, ranging in price from $5-$50. Monetary donations will also be accepted, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the Kansas Food Bank.

Instead of the traditional chili cook-off competition, Bowl Fest will feature food trucks, live printmaking and wheel throwing demonstrations. Come join the fun and help support the Kansas Food Bank.

It’s time again for the Ulrich Museum of Art’s popular Family Fun Day. The fun takes place from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the museum. Bring the family for an afternoon of hands-on art making, stories, and fun discoveries inspired by the Ulrich’s world class 82-piece Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection.

The next “Voices from the Vault: The 1990s” series discussion will feature artist Jos Sances at 6 p.m. today, April 26 at the Ulrich Museum of Art. The event will also be available via live stream. There will be a reception before at 5:30 p.m.

Sances, a narrative artist, will deliver a talk titled “Printing on the Edge of the World,” which will discuss the contradictions of making politically engaged art in a privileged society obsessed with consumption.

During the talk, Sances will share his excitement for printmaking, the joys of survival within the art community, and the practice of examining, accepting and creating while facing a challenging future. The “Voices from the Vault: The 1990s” series is made possible by funding from Humanities Kansas, a nonprofit cultural organization that connects communities with history, traditions, and ideas to strengthen civic life.

The Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University is now accepting applications from WSU students for its paid internship program, which offers valuable experience in the everyday workings of a university art museum. The Ulrich Museum of Art is accepting applications from Wichita State students for its paid internship program until April 25. The  three internships programs offers students valuable experience in the everyday workings of a university art museum. Students from any level or area of study are encouraged to apply. 

Ulrich internships offer students interdisciplinary experiential learning that is informative on both intellectual and practical levels. Tasks may include assisting with research for exhibitions, handling and documenting works of art, helping with publicity, participating in exhibition installations, working on public programs and events, and giving exhibition tours.

The three internships offered during the 2022-2023 academic year are supported by the Stev Overstreet Ulrich Museum of Art Internship Fund and The Kouri Assistantship Endowment. 

To apply, students must email a current resume accompanied by a cover letter to Ksenya Gurshtein, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Jana Erwin, Head of Education.

Lebanese American artist Annabel Daou will give an artist talk at the Ulrich Museum of Art  at 6 p.m. today, April 5. There will be a reception before at 5:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

Daou is known for her poetic conceptual pieces that often mine history and use language across multiple media to empower viewers in the present moment. Her talk, titled “Being Numerous,” will address her works which feature multiple voices and responses. The Ulrich recently acquired Daou’s sound installation “DECLARATION,” which is currently on exhibit at Wichita State’s Grace Memorial Chapel. Daou will discuss this installation during the event.

The Ulrich Museum of Art will host an artist talk featuring Wichita-based artist Ann Resnick at 6 p.m. today, March 8. There will be a reception before at 5:30 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public.

Resnick has been making art for more than forty years. A pillar of contemporary art in Wichita, she has worked as a gallerist, activist and exhibiting artist to benefit the local community for 25 years. Shown nationally and internationally, much of her work has never been seen in Wichita. She will discuss her current exhibition, “Chapter & Verse,” with curator Ksenya Gurshtein. “Chapter & Verse” presents highlights of her artistic career going back to the 1990s. The exhibition is on display at the Ulrich Museum through May 7.

The Ulrich Museum of Art’s Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will take place at the museum 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9. The event is part of the museum’s Women’s History Month celebrations and is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.

For the third year in a row, the Ulrich is partnering with Art + Feminism, and other communities nationwide, to research, edit and add information to the Wikipedia entries for women and other underrepresented artists. Click here to learn more.
