Research topic/purpose for the study: To assess what muscle(s) or muscle groups activate and how an individual’s physiological measures (heart rate, blood pressure, muscle oxygen saturation, cardiorespiratory) respond in different position settings (i.e., Power Climb, Power Stairs, Power Sled) while engaging in physical activity on the Challenger.

Procedures: Participants will perform physical activity (e.g., movement of arms and/or legs through a full range of motion) in different body position settings on Challenger, a new fitness device. During the assessment, you will be fitted with electromyography (EMG) electrodes to record muscle response and muscle activity during movement on the device. Heart rate, blood pressure, muscle oxygen saturation and rate of perceived exertion will also be measured. Physical activity in each body position setting will last at least two minutes and no more than 15 minutes while maintaining a heart rate between 60-75% estimated heart rate max.

Time: Participation is expected to last about 45-60 minutes.

Inclusion/exclusion criteria:

  • Participants must be age 18 or older
  • No known neuromuscular, orthopedic disorder that may negatively impact body movement
  • No known cardiorespiratory or metabolic health condition(s)
  • No history of previous or current injuries that would impair movement

Location: Human Performance Laboratory, 210 Heskett Center

"Are you Theorious?" podcast cover image

Four clinical mental health counseling students from Wichita State have launched the “Are You Theorious?” podcast. Greg Chewning, Alec Dulaney, Damian Montanez and Timber Keller aim to foster community and inspire creativity in clinical mental health.

Covering topics like counseling theories, emotions, diagnoses, relationships and client experiences, the podcast seeks to spark wonder, aid in personal growth and empathize with listeners. Drawing from their Wichita State experiences, the podcast serves as a platform to share insights, with weekly episodes featuring group discussions, smaller formats and insightful monologues.

The Regional Institute on Aging (RIA) at Wichita State is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for graduate student or faculty projects and research, supported by a gift from the estate of Evelyn Cassat, that addresses issues related to facilitating well-being in older adults.

The RIA is currently accepting applications until April 1.

Burglar walking out of a phone with a social security card in his hands

A social security number (SSN) is a very sensitive piece of identifiable information, and when it falls in the wrong hands, it can put you at risk for identity theft and lead to:

  • A credit card being opened and used under your name leaving you with large amounts of debt and a poor credit score
  • Your tax refund benefit being stolen
  • Your social security or medical insurance benefits being stolen

Email is not always a secure form of transfer and should never be used to transfer SSNs. As WSU Policy 19.01 states, SSNs should not be stored on university and personal devices, which includes email storage.

For questions about how to safely transfer this type of sensitive information, email askinfosec@wichita.edu.
