Shocker Leadership Experience | May 13-17, 2024 - Rock Springs 4-H Center | Transportation, Food Lodging & T-shirt are all included for free!

The Shocker Leadership Experience (SLE) is a free five-day, four-night overnight experience at Rock Springs 4-H Camp in Junction City, Kansas from Monday, May 13 to Friday, May 17.

SLE engages participants in leadership knowledge and skill development facilitated in both small and large groups, as well as through numerous interactive activities. The program is great for all students, regardless of leadership experience. Topics include:

  • Self-leadership
  • Building community/belonging
  • Leadership power and influence
  • Living and leading on purpose

Transportation, food, lodging and a T-shirt are all included at no additional charge.

Usha Haley, Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business, director of the Center for International Business Advancement and chair of the World Trade Council of Wichita, was quoted in the Wichita Business Journal on considerations regarding a successful acquisition of home-town company Spirit by Boeing in the article, “A Boeing Buyout of Spirit AeroSystems might not mean a ‘deluge of pink slips.’”

Faculty members with an interest in recruiting future Shockers can apply to become a Recruitment Faculty Fellow. Applications for the 2024-25 academic year are open through Friday, April 26.

Recruitment Faculty Fellows work in partnership with the Office of Admissions to recruit new students to the university. The Faculty Fellows engage in both in-person and virtual recruitment efforts and serve as advocates within their college to inform others about admissions activities and operations.

The Barton School of Business proudly announces the appointment of Kianga Crowley as the inaugural manager of the Barton School’s Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD). With an extensive background in communication, development and mentorship, Crowley brings a wealth of experience and a passion for empowering individuals to her new role.

Prior to joining the Barton School, Crowley served as the director of development at GraceMed Health Clinic, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic planning skills. Her dedication to community engagement and personal development is evident in her work as the founder and etiquette consultant at Simply a Lady Co. LLC, a business focused on enhancing self-esteem and preparing individuals for success in professional and social settings. As the manager of the Office of Career & Professional Development, she will play a pivotal role in guiding Barton School undergraduate and graduate students towards fulfilling career opportunities and professional growth.

Expressing her enthusiasm for her new position, Crowley stated, “I am truly honored to join the Barton School’s Office of Career and Professional Development. I am eager to leverage my experience and passion for mentorship to support students in achieving their personal and professional aspirations.”

Norah O’Donnell, anchor for the CBS Evening News and “60 Minutes” contributor, headlined Wichita State’s 2024 Craig W. Barton Speaker Series March 21.

O’Donnell spoke to attendees at Miller Concert Hall in Duerksen Fine Arts Center and answered questions from the audience. Earlier in the day, she met with students in the Rhatigan Student Center during her visit to WSU.

The Craig W. Barton Speaker Series is an annual Wichita State event established to expose students and the community to differing points of view and encourage critical thinking and conversation. Previous speakers include Robert Gates, 22nd United States secretary of defense (2006-2011), and Cody Keenan, former White House director of speechwriting for President Barack Obama.

NIAR is offering training on geometric dimensional and tolerancing (GD&T) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 23-25 in John Bardo Center. Prior registration is required.

The course is a practical and straightforward introduction to GD&T and conforms to the Standard ASME Y14.5M-2018.

The objective of the course is to provide students with a practical understanding of fundamental GD&T, which can immediately be applied to their current work environment. The expert-led training covers the history of GD&T and provides an in-depth study of geometric characteristics and tolerance zones in an easy-to-understand format. The class is lecture-based, but also provides time for student questions and classroom discussions. Students are encouraged to bring their own drawings as real-world examples for the class to review and learn from.

Attendees should have a basic knowledge of how to read blueprints and engineering drawings prior to taking this course. Attendees who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion from WSU-NIAR. A workbook is included in the cost of training and is yours to keep.
