The School of Performing Arts invites the community to experience the artistry and insights of Kirven Douthit-Boyd, an internationally recognized dancer, choreographer, educator and artistic director of Saint Louis Dance Theatre, during two special public events in October.
As part of the College of Fine Arts Connoisseur Series, Douthit-Boyd will present an artist talk and dance film screening from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 in the Polk/Wilson Gallery at the Ulrich Museum of Art. The evening will feature a screening of some of Douthit-Boyd’s performances and acclaimed dance works followed by a conversation exploring his creative process, artistic practice, leadership and the power of movement as storytelling. Drawing from a distinguished career that includes 11 years performing with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Douthit-Boyd brings unique perspectives on performance, collaboration, community engagement and contemporary dance. The event is free and open to the public and is funded by the Sam & Rie Bloomfield Foundation.
The residency will culminate in a studio showing at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18 in Studio 144B at the Heskett Center. During this informal performance, audiences will have the opportunity to view original choreography Douthit-Boyd has created and set on Wichita State dance students during his residency. The showing offers a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic process and the impact of professional guest artists on student training and creative development.
Whether attending the artist talk, film screening, studio showing or both experiences, audiences will gain insight into the creative vision of one of today’s most influential leader in the arts.
