Purpose: You are invited to participate in a research study to examine how people roll from their back onto their hands and knees (quadruped position). We want to learn more about how people roll so that we can better understand the potential connection to a rolling style with various muscle strengths.
Explanation of procedures: We will perform manual muscle tests on your arm and leg muscles with a handheld force transducer to measure your muscle strength. These tests will be performed up to three times on both your arms and legs before and after your roll. You will rest two to five minutes and then be asked to perform a Plank Test to fatigue. You will then perform the 30-second rolling test after a two to five minute rest from 1: your back to your right and onto your hands and knees and assuming a quadruped position, 2: to your left onto your back, 3: to your left onto your hands and knees and into a quadruped position, and 4: to your right onto your back. After the second set of manual muscle tests, you will rest for approximately five minutes. After the five-minute rest period, you will be asked to perform a 30-second Chair Stand test; stand up from and sit down in a chair as many times as you can in 30 seconds.
Time: It is expected that participation in the study will not exceed 45 minutes.
Inclusion/exclusion criteria:
- Participants must be aged 35-50 years
- No known neuromuscular, orthopedic disorder that may negatively impact body movement
- No known cardiorespiratory or metabolic health condition(s)
- No history of previous or current injuries that would impair movement
Location: Wichita State University, Multidisciplinary Human Biomechanics & Design Lab, 3rd Floor, John Bardo Center.
