Support for department chairs and leaders with Ombuds Office

Department chairs and academic leaders can consult the Ombuds Office for support in managing departmental dynamics, resolving disputes or referring faculty to appropriate resources. You don’t have to handle it alone. Resources are available at wichita.edu/ombuds.

University Libraries expands free journal publishing

Want to publish a research article open access, but can’t afford the fees? Consider a Cambridge University Press or Springer journal.

Since 2024, Shockers have been publishing open-access in Springer journals without paying fees through a deal negotiated by University Libraries. Now, Shockers can publish in most Cambridge University Press journals without paying fees, too.

There are dozens of high-quality journals available through these programs, covering every area of scholarship. To find eligible journals, use the Cambridge Eligibility Checker or Springer’s Journal Finder.

Women’s bowling win Arlington Regional, advance to Final Four

Shocker women’s bowling completed an incredible run through the elimination bracket to win the Arlington Regional and advance to the program’s second consecutive Final Four.

The Shockers (77-34) will take on #1 Jacksonville State on Friday, April 10 at Yorktown Lanes in Parma Heights, Ohio.

Celebrate Master’s Week with a tradition unlike any other at Eck Stadium as the Shockers take on the Kansas State Wildcats on April 7. Enjoy a golf-themed game experience featuring nods to Augusta. The first 300 fans receive a free six-can Shocker Baseball cooler bag. The first pitch is at 6 p.m.

Service-Learning Showcase submissions are now open

The Service-Learning Showcase is a unique opportunity for students who participate in service-learning through applied learning opportunities to showcase their experience through a research or reflective poster about the application of their course work to current community issues.

The showcase is an open forum for students to interact with faculty/staff, community partners and other students to engage in conversation about Wichita State’s commitment to the public good. Awards are presented in the following categories:

Outstanding Overall Service-Learning Project: $550 scholarship to winning entry
Innovation and Creativity in Problem Solving: $350 scholarship to winning entry
Community Impact/ Community Choice: $350 scholarship to winning entry
Collaboration and Leadership in Service-Learning: $350 scholarship to winning entry

And new this year are the Faculty Mentoring Awards, which will be provided to the sponsoring faculty of students awarded in the above categories.

The Lecture Series in the Mathematical Sciences presents Dr. Ray Treinen

Join a public lecture by Dr. Ray Treinen, professor of mathematics from Texas State University. Treinen will present “Spectral methods for the equilibrium shapes of fluids” at 3 p.m. Friday, April 10 in 372 Jabara Hall. Refreshments will be available at 2:30 p.m. in 371 Jabara Hall.

College of Health Professions and Delta Gamma Sorority present lectureship on health care values and ethics

Join the College of Health Professions and Delta Gamma Sorority for a presentation by Seth Dewey, who will share insights into his work at Mirror Inc. and the services it provides, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 6 in 110B Woolsey Hall, Boettger Auditorium. He will also discuss addiction and its impact on college students. Refreshments served at 6 p.m.

Dewey is a program director for Mirror Inc., a Kansas-based behavioral health organization focused on recovery, harm reduction and community well-being. His work is grounded in public health and shaped by lived experience, positioning him at the intersection of systems leadership, policy and community-based change.

Be part of history: NYSE closing bell watch party

Join the Barton School of Business as it celebrates the Barton School’s centennial on a global stage. Faculty and staff are invited to stop by for a live watch party of the New York Stock Exchange Closing Bell ceremony. Live coverage begins at 2:55 p.m., with the bell ringing at 3:00 p.m., Monday, April 6 at the Woolsey Hall atrium.

This milestone event highlights 100 years of impact and leadership. You can be part of the celebration right here on campus. Enjoy a cider toast while watching the live stream with colleagues and fellow Shockers.

Attend upcoming I-Corps information session

Curious if your idea has real market potential? Join an upcoming I-Corps information session from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 in the John Bardo Center lobby to learn how you can test your concept, talk to real customers and reduce risk before pursuing funding or launching a venture.

The event is open to researchers, students and community innovators. Whether you’re a newcomer to innovation, or an experienced entrepreneur, I-Corps is a great place to start. The session is free to attend but RSVP is required.

Office of Community Partnership to host April meeting

The Office of Community Partnership serves as a supportive and collaborative hub for community-focused initiatives housed in WSU offices. OCP aims to strengthen the well-being of Kansas residents, organizations and communities. The office serves as a resource for faculty, staff and students who want to engage in community efforts, especially in the public, social and health services fields.

OCP’s next meeting is scheduled from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30 in the Rhatigan Student Center’s Herman Room. Special guest Lainie Mazzullo-Hart, Wichita State’s director of strategic communications, will speak about best practices for working with the Office of Strategic Communications.

The 2026 Kansas Urban Native Health Summit is coming up

There’s still time to register for the Kansas Urban Native Health Summit, taking place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 30 at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. The summit will bring together tribal leaders, public health professionals, community advocates and partners.

The summit offers a valuable opportunity to connect, learn from one another and engage in meaningful conversations that help build stronger, healthier communities. Registration is free but closes on April 11, so be sure to secure your spot soon.

Join the HEALTH Student Association and the Department of Public Health Sciences from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 on the Rhatigan Student Center north patio as they celebrate National Public Heath Week.

HEALTH members will share information about campus food resources. Learn how food insecurity is addressed on campus and grab a snack, while supplies last. This event is free and everyone is welcome.
