Purple Day: Support awareness of dating, domestic violence Oct. 23

Join HOPE Services, in collaboration with the Wichita State University Police Department, in wearing purple Monday, Oct. 23 for Purple Day to help spread awareness about the issue of domestic violence, the help that is available and support survivors.

Visit HOPE Services and the prevention ambassador tables Oct. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center and from 2 to 3 p.m. in Shocker Hall to contribute to the “Hands are not for Hurting” mural and pick up resources.

Student Health Services promotes National Prescription Drug Take Back Month

Students, faculty and staff can anonymously drop off any unused or expired medications to Student Health Services (SHS) until Oct. 27 and it will dispose of them safely. Drop off any medications or prescriptions to SHS, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

October is National Prescription Drug Take Back Month, which is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) program to prevent drug misuse or abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Shockers Vote delegation applications are open

Would you like to get involved in the 2024 election? The Shockers Vote delegation will lead the planning, implementation and facilitation of all Shockers Vote initiatives leading into the 2024 election.

Delegation positions consist of the following: president, marketing, deliberative dialogue and voter engagement. The Ambassador position will take place from January 2024 to December 2024. Interviews for the positions will take place in November, and applicants will be notified of their placement in early December. Delegates will be compensated for their work.

The Center for Entrepreneurship has funding dedicated to helping Shockers make their ideas rock the marketplace.

The Center for Entrepreneurship knows that building an idea can be challenging, especially when faced with financial constraints, and that’s why its excited to offer these opportunities to remove those barriers. It’s about encouraging students to explore their innovative ideas and take risks as they build ideas with commercial possibility.

Call for nominations for 2024 transition mentor staff

The Office of Student Success and First-Year Programs are looking for nominations of students that you believe will make an outstanding transition mentor (TM). TMs play a vital role in guiding, supporting and motivating incoming Shockers throughout summer orientation programs and in the fall semester.

Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 31 and applications will open Nov. 1.

Learn about WSU’s Community Psychology doctoral program

Learn more about the Psychology Department’s community psychology doctoral program at its virtual information session from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25 via Zoom.

Community psychology is a growing field that conducts social justice-focused, action-oriented research. There are only twenty community psychology doctoral programs in the U.S., and one of them is at Wichita State. Students are accepted at both a bachelor’s and master’s level and frequently come from a variety of undergraduate majors, including psychology, social work, criminal justice, public health, sociology, women’s, ethnicity, and intersectional studies, and more.

Biological sciences seminar series continues with Dr. Heather Rice

The Department of Biological Sciences’ fall 2023 seminar series continues from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 in 218 Hubbard Hall. Join Dr. Heather Rice from the Oklahoma Health Science Center for her talk, “The physiological function of the amyloid precursor protein.”

Seminars are open to the public and undergraduates are encouraged to attend.

Yeni Silva-Renteria will speak about the International Rescue Committee

In conjunction with “Where We Belong: Refugee Stories from Wichita,” Yeni Silva-Renteria, executive director of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Kansas, will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 in the Beren Gallery at the Ulrich Museum of Art. A reception will be held starting at 5:30 p.m.

Silva-Renteria will discuss the IRC’s refugee resettlement efforts in Wichita and the larger context of such efforts in the U.S. today.

Dr. Isaac Rutel, OU Health Sciences Center, to speak at next physics seminar

Join the Department of Physics for its next physics seminar at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25 in 226 Jabara Hall.

The seminar features Dr. Isaac Rutel from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and his talk, “Medical Physics as a Career Path for Researchers: Some Work Peri and Post Clinic.” There will also be a discussion in 042 Jabara Hall for students following the seminar.

Connect with Shockers all across campus by submitting an item to Shocker Blast, Wichita State’s internal student newsletter.

If you are a member of a WSU student organization and want to share your campus event with fellow students, submit an item for consideration in Shocker Blast. Please keep in mind the following consideration criteria:

Submissions run up to twice in the newsletter and should be 150 words or fewer in length.
Images should be 800×600 pixels in size and contain less than 20 words. Text must also be accessible, so it must be large-sized font and contrasted with the background.
Submissions may be edited. If significant changes are required, we will reach back out prior to publication in the newsletter.

Shockers Vote! invites Shockers to USD 259 School Board candidate forum

Join the Shockers Vote! Coalition for a USD 259 School Board forum from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25 in 211 Hubbard Hall. The forum is a partnership with the the Shockers Vote! Coalition, Wichita Beacon, Loud Light and the League of Women Voters.

All candidates for the USD 259 School Board races have been invited. The forum will provide an opportunity for each candidate to answer a series of questions, and the candidates will be allowed 90 seconds for their answers as well as introductory and closing remarks. Content for the question has come from Wichita State students as well as from Wichita Beacon readers, who were invited to submit questions in September.

The forum will be moderated by Sophie Martins, student body vice president.

The English Honors Society presents its annual Flannel Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23 in 319 Rhatigan Student Center, McKay Room.

Wear flannels and join the event for crafts, cozy readings, treats, a raffle and fun. The event is come and go for all students at no additional charge.

Join Mental Health and Movement Class at Steve Clark YMCA Oct. 24

Join the launch of the new Mental Health and Movement Class starting at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 24 in the Steve Clark YMCA Studio, where participants will explore what makes practicing movement feel so hard, the benefits of moving and how to use the resources at the YMCA.

The four-week class is open to anyone at no additional charge and sponsored by the YMCA and HOPE Services. Participants will practice basic breathing exercises.

Campus Recreation hosting night of haunted events

Campus Recreation is hosting its annual Fright Night from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at the Heskett Center. The event is open to the campus community at no additional charge.

The event will feature glow yoga, a haunted house, movies, snacks, a costume contest and more. Costumes are encouraged.

World Trade Council, CIBA invite campus to program on China

The World Trade Council of Wichita and the Center for International Business Advancement’s (CIBA) next program, “Is China a National Security Threat and How does this Affect Business?,” will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Wichita Country Club, 8501 E. 13th St. North and feature Don McClure, colonel in the US Air Force and an expert on grand strategy, will put the issues in perspective; David Graff, a professor at KSU and an expert on East Asian military history; and Usha Haley, a professor at WSU and an expert on China strategies.

Acknowledging the interconnectedness of national security and business concerns, the three expert panelists will address the topic from diverse perspectives. All panelists will address the implications of current events for business and society.

Reservations for the program are $45 for members and $55 for non-members, which includes a networking hour with complimentary wine reception and a three-course sit-down dinner. The event is capped to 65 attendees.

Center for Entrepreneurship invites students to Clash Build Cash competition

The Center for Entrepreneurship invites Shockers Clash Build Cash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 15 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.

Clash Build Cash offers an unparalleled opportunity to develop and demonstrate a wide range of essential professional skills, including strategic decision-making, adaptability and innovative thinking. Students of any academic background are welcome to participate in the multiplayer business simulation game hosted on Venture Valley.
