Wichita State’s University Village initiative moves to feedback stage

In the next steps toward the creation of the University Village, Wichita State University is seeking public feedback and engagement on the lead proposals.

Public meetings will be on Wednesday, Feb. 23 in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom of Wichita State’s Rhatigan Student Center. These sessions will be offered in-person and virtually via Zoom (Meeting ID: 956 5059 0889, Password: 598259). There will be three meetings:

2 to 3 p.m. for Wichita State students, faculty and staff
4 to 5 p.m. for everyone on Wichita State’s main campus and Innovation Campus
6:30 to 8 p.m. for the Wichita community

Nutrition Discussion focuses on body composition testing today

For the next Nutrition Discussion, Andy Sykes will cover how body composition testing works with demonstration and how to interpret the results at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 21 via Facebook Live. Learn more about your body and how to make smart goals when attempting to adjust its composition.

Ulrich Museum of Art hosting open mic night

Are you a Wichita State student in search of an audience? Consider signing up for Pass the Mic, a new open mic night at the Ulrich Museum of Art 7-9 p.m. Feb. 24. All WSU undergraduate and graduate students are invited to take the stage with performances in poetry, music, dance, stand-up, theatre and art.

Take a Tax Prep 101 class with SAC

Filing your taxes doesn’t have to be difficult. Attend the Student Activities Council’s (SAC) Tax Prep 101 class at 6 p.m. March 3 and 9 at the Rhatigan Student Center (Room 203). Registration is required to attend. During the class, a professional will walk participants through how to file their taxes.

Performances

Student soloists featured in WSU Symphony Orchestra concert

Six student soloists will combine with Wichita State’s Symphony Orchestra for the annual Concerto-Aria Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22 at Miller Concert Hall. The program includes music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Kabalevsky, Donizetti, Gounod, Eric Ewazen, and Frank Martin. Director of orchestras Mark Laycock will lead the performance.

Chosen by competitive auditions, the soloists include I-Cheng Che, marimba; Kathryn Ensey, flute; Anne Yap I-Shyuen, piano; Ethan Manlove, tenor; Madison Roths, soprano; and Tyler Tuncy, horn. Graduate student conductor Clem Pearson and guest conductor Dr. Nathaniel Parker from Kennesaw State University will also appear.

President Muma hosting town hall for all students tomorrow

All Wichita State Students are invited to a town hall with President Rick Muma beginning at 2 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 22 at the Rhatigan Student Center Sante Fe Room. Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Shirley Lefever will also be a featured guest.

Support Mental Health and get a $5 ticket for WSU vs. South Florida

Help end the stigma of mental health and show your support by wearing a Suspenders4Hope T-shirt at the Shocker Women’s Basketball game vs. South Florida at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at Charles Koch Arena.

Participants wearing the shirt will get a discounted $5 ticket. To get a free Suspenders4Hope T-shirt, complete the #WeSupportU Preventing Suicide Training at #WeSupportU website. Shirts are also available for purchase at the Shocker Store. All proceeds of the Suspenders4Hope T-shirt fund support prevention programming in the Shocker community.

Celebrate National TRIO Week

TRIO is a group of federally funded outreach programs that were put in place to support disadvantaged students who want to pursue higher education. Wichita State University sponsors eight TRIO programs, each of them focusing on a specific population and with a unique focus.

The TRIO programs listed below, including the Haysville GEAR UP and Kansas Kids @ GEAR UP programs, are under the umbrella of the Office of Special Programs in the Division of Strategic Engagement and Planning. Since 1986, the last Saturday of each February has been designated as National TRIO Day to recognize the efforts of these programs in assisting our nation’s low-income and first-generation college students.

Take a survey about food security

All Wichita State students are asked to complete a ten-minute online survey to gather information about food security across the campus. The survey is a partnership between WSU, the city of Wichita, Friends University, and Newman University to gather information about food security faced by post-secondary students in the Wichita area. The survey is anonymous and will be used to inform an action plan to address the issue.

Student Ambassador Society requesting nominations

Nominate yourself or another student for membership in Wichita State’s Student Ambassador Society (SAS). All nominations will be accepted through March 1.

SAS is supported by the Office of Admissions and provides support and outreach to prospective students with Shocker spirit. SAS is a community of selfless, hardworking and involved students from all areas of our campus who seek to give back to our university through service to others.

The SAS nomination application is an anonymous form that allows the WSU community to recognize remarkable students.

Apply for Osher Scholarship

The Office of Adult Learning is now accepting applications for the Osher Reentry Scholarship. To qualify, students must be fully enrolled at Wichita State, pursuing their first bachelor’s degree, have a cumulative gap in their education of at least five years and only 50% of their classes can be online.
