As October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sigma Psi Zeta is hosting a drive for ICT SOS from Oct. 19-26. ICT SOS is a Wichita-based organization that seeks to end human trafficking through prevention and awareness education, advocacy for survivors, and acting as a bridge between direct service professionals and community members who desire to help.

As a community, one of the simplest things we can do is to organize and provide those resources so that they are on hand and easily accessible in a moment of crisis. Items must to be new, as survivors deserve a fresh new start. Donations can be dropped off at the SEAL Office (RSC 216).

As you are helping Sigma Psi Zeta contribute to our philanthropy of combating violence against womxn, we would like to offer the same to you. We will be donating $100 to the philanthropy or chosen charity of the organization that donates the most to our drive.

Are you interested in judging Songfest 2022? The Office of Student Engagement, Advocacy & Leadership is requesting five to seven staff, faculty, alumni and campus partners to serve as judges for the show at 5 p.m. Nov. 6.

Songfest is an annual dance and lip sync competition that rounds out Shocktoberfest Oct. 20-29. During the event, teams practice will perform with choreography, music selections and costumes.

Wichita State will host its tenth annual Expanding Your Horizons STEM workshop for middle school girls 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at Hubbard Hall. Volunteers are needed to assist with workshops, photography and will receive a free T-shirt and lunch.

Campus Activities and Recreation is requesting donations of the following items for its upcoming Fright Night event:

• Large boxes
• Clear gallon milk or juice jugs
• Old curtains
• Dolls
• Plastic pumpkins
• Skulls
• Other Halloween-themed items

Donations can be dropped off at 129 Heskett Center.

Wu Reads is requesting volunteers to read children’s books aloud virtually to Gordon Parks Elementary School students on Friday afternoons. Volunteers will also ask the students questions about the books to help them better understand the story.

To participate, volunteers are asked to commit to 20 minutes from 2:40 to 3 p.m. on Friday afternoons for a year.

Wu Crew Read is part of an effort to help USD 259 reach its long-term strategic goal of increasing third-grade reading proficiency, which aligns with Wichita State’s mission to becoming an educational driver for Kansas and the greater public good.

Wichita State’s Sexual Health, Advocacy, Resources, and Education (SHARE) of Planned Parenthood student organization is seeking to fill several open officer positions this semester, including but not limited to:

• President
• Treasurer
• Event coordinator

SHARE is an inclusive student-based organization open to undergraduates, graduate students and community members that emphasizes community organizing, social advocacy, awareness and education about reproductive justice and health inequities. They aim to fight for individuals’ freedoms to control their own bodies and futures, to promote research and the advancement of technology in reproductive health care, and to protect and empower the student body and the Wichita community.

Save the Kitties, co-sponsored by Wichita State and United Way of the Great Plains, is hosting its second annual car show 2- 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Derby. Car registration begins at noon. Volunteers are needed to assist with donations, parking, vendor and booths. This free event will include food, raffles and more.

Save the Kitties is a non-profit, no-kill cat shelter in Derby, Kansas. The group needs help to provide care for its more than 70 surrendered and stray cats.

Wichita State’s Prevention Services has launched a new substance abuse prevention campaign, in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Transportation, focusing on safety around alcohol and impaired driving. To get involved, Innovation Campus partners can do the following:

• Visit our social media pages at @ShockersCAPS and @WSUPrevention.
• Donate to our program.
• Encourage those around you to not drive impaired.
• Consider resources you can provide to your team on a regular basis or after company events to decrease impaired driving.
• Reach out to Prevention Services if you would like to talk more about options and our program.

The 2022 the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), supported by the campus club T1DShockers, a group of WSU students with type1 diabetes, will host a walk to raise money for a cure to Type 1 Diabetes 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 on the Wichita State campus. Volunteers are needed for various responsibilities, including food distribution, welcoming and ushering guests, photography, operating the kid’s play area and cheering on walkers.

The Cohen Honors College is seeking faculty mentors to work with students selected to participate in the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) in STEM. All interested faculty members should apply by Oct. 14, and are also encouraged to nominate graduate students to serve as FYRE mentors.

The mission of this FYRE in STEM program is to build a community of STEM students, faculty and professionals from various STEM backgrounds to support young STEM majors or potential majors as they form identities as members of the scientific community, thus improving the likelihood that they will persist to graduation.

To allow the FYRE in STEM program to be a success, we are looking for dedicated research mentors from across campus who can provide an appropriate short-term STEM research project in the spring 2023 semester.
