Finding the right OER for courses can be daunting for faculty. The workshop, “Beyond the Basics: Finding, Evaluating and Adopting OER,” will review the best places to begin searching for OER textbooks, assignments, lectures and other materials. Join the workshop at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 via Zoom.

It will also cover how to evaluate OER to make sure it’s a good fit for students and the institution. Since planning time is precious, participants will be encouraged to practice searching and evaluating during the workshop to make the best use of their time.

NVIDIA, NetApp and Mark III Systems are hosting a free AI/Machine Learning Education Series for Wichita State students, faculty, staff and the greater community for spring 2023.

These sessions will feature machine-learning (ML) experts, who will dive into current trends around AI/ML via tutorials and hands-on rapid labs designed around practical AI education. This series is virtual and will be delivered remotely via Jupyter Notebooks.

• Intro to Machine Learning and AI: The Basics, A Tutorial, and Lab — 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 8.
• Introduction to Deep Learning and Neural Networks — 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 22.
• Introduction to Datasets — 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 5
• Introduction to Computer Vision — 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 19
• Getting Started with Containers and AI — 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 3

Enjoy exploring social trends, weather predictions or other data-driven topics and looking for a simple way to view and analyze the data? WSU Libraries invites the campus community to its workshop, Getting Started with Data Visualization in ArcGIS Online. It will introduce the major tools for data visualization that are easily accessible.

The workshop will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 in 217 Ablah Library or via Zoom.

All faculty and staff are invited to attend one of three upcoming Curriculum Management (CIM) virtual training sessions available this semester at the following dates and times:

• 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.
• 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28.
• 1-2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20.

The one and a half hour Zoom session will provide a demonstration of how to submit a curriculum change proposal via the online CIM course and program forms, how to search for existing proposals, how a proposal moves through the electronic workflow, and how to approve proposals. The last 30 minutes will be dedicated to questions.

Registration is required to attend the session. To register, visit the myTraining link on the Faculty/Staff tab of myWSU, then search for “CourseLeaf Curriculum (CIM) Administrator & Faculty Remote Training.”

A link to the session will be emailed in advance of the training after registering. Reach out to the instructor if a Zoom link has not be emailed within 24 hours of the registered session. Contact the following for each session:

To log into CIM during the training session, participants will need a dual authentication (DUO) device.

Staff and faculty who are unable to attend a session can view CourseLeaf user guides on the Registrar Office’s website.

The Faculty Senate has invited Donna Louden, a principal instructor with the International Ombudsman Association, to provide introductory Ombuds training for faculty or staff members who are interested in participating this spring.

Participants are under no obligation to serve as formal ombudspersons on campus. The sessions will be from noon to 4 p.m. on April 14 and 21 via Zoom. Capacity is limited. RSVP to carolyn.shaw@wichita.edu.

Faculty Senate ombudspersons are available to provide assistance to faculty members in the identification or articulation of internal disputes that arise within the university. The ombudsperson’s role is to listen to concerns arising from disputes within the university, provide resources, and clarify procedural options and may facilitate a satisfactory settlement of the dispute without necessitating the filing of a grievance.

Learn how to help someone in need and spread hope by attending the next #WSUWeSupportU preventing suicide training from Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS). The training will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 in 256 Rhatigan Student Center.

The training is free for all participants. Students can register via the CAPS webpage, and staff and faculty can register on myTraining. All in attendance will also receive a free Suspenders4Hope T-shirt.

Attend the free #WeSupportU Suspenders4Hope evidence-based training session and receive free CEUs. Hosted in partnership with Sedgwick County and StopSuicideICT, the first 100 registrants will receive a free Suspenders4Hope t-shirt.

The training is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in the Sunflower Room of the Sedgwick County Extension Office, 7001 W. 21st Street North in Wichita.

The training is presented by Dr. Jessica Provines, WSU’s assistant vice president for wellness and chief psychologist. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Free artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can write full essays are now here. In the past two months, free online AI tools have gone from being able to write reasonable paragraphs from a simple prompt to producing full essays with citations on more complex topics. These tools will continue to develop rapidly, and professors, advisors and others who work with students need to be aware of these tools and what they can do.

During the week of Jan. 9-13, there will be several online presentations on topics associated with artificial intelligence, and we hope instructors and student-facing staff can make time to attend at least one of these sessions:

• 10 a.m. Jan. 9: President Muma will be discussing Digital Transformation at WSU, and he will be followed by John Jones, who will provide further context for discussions about AI and related topics. Here is the Outlook Invite for President Muma’s discussion.
• Noon Jan. 10: WSU will be hosting a panel on partnering with AI for creative pursuits such as writing and visual art. There will be a related discussion of the academic integrity implications of AI as well. Here is the Outlook Invite for the Creative Use of AI panel.
