Armchair Strategies is a community collective founded to create an avenue for Wichita State student-athletes to partner with local businesses and organizations on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) activity, an activity that student-athletes were unable to do until recently. This gives WSU student-athletes the opportunity to make positive contributions to the Shocker fan base and local community, all while receiving compensation.

Through Armchair Strategies, fans are able to cultivate and facilitate opportunities for Shocker student-athletes, giving them a platform, resources and support to be successful in growing through college and beyond. Funds ensure Armchair can provide financial literacy and education, brand setup, management, secure transactions and career development for these talented college athletes.

Armchair will roll out a variety of ways to get involved. With a small monthly contribution, any Shocker fan can join the Armchair Army and receive exclusive monthly perks to support Wichita State student-athletes. Another option is the Century Club, which is an exclusive group of 100 supporters that have each committed to donate $1,000 per month to a fund used for NIL opportunities. Benefits of The Century Club include partner listing on website, annual event with athletes, membership book for networking and more.

Wichita State students Mason Burden (left), Jordan Emerson (middle) and Nate Rundell are among the students in the sport management program helping with NCAA Tournament preparations at Intrust Bank Arena. Students work in several areas during the set-up, practices and games.

Lucy Schneider is a sports fan who played volleyball, basketball and softball at Caldwell High School and loves the Kansas City Chiefs. She watches the Wichita State University women’s basketball team with a fondness because she is a resident assistant at Shocker Hall, where four of the team’s freshmen live.

In recent weeks, she learned to watch sports on TV with a new perspective. It takes collaboration, organization, and a flair for the theatrical to pull off a big-time event.

Schneider watches the small army of people running things on the sidelines because she is now one of those people. Schneider, a junior majoring in sport management, will work as floor manager for the women’s NCAA Tournament Regional Round basketball at Intrust Bank Arena.

“Watching the games and seeing all the staff and what they’re doing behind the scenes, it’s really apparent to me now,” she said. “Something I’m really excited for … is the celebration ceremony and the trophy presentation. It’s super-interesting to me to tie in with the TV side of things, but also the arena side of things and making sure the fan experience is well throughout all aspects.”
