Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Alternative Spring Break trip in Boulder Creek, CA. The trip will be spent volunteering as camp counselors at Camp Campbell, Outdoor Science School.

The California Outdoor Science Association is sponsored by the California Department of Education. WSU volunteers will serve as camp counselors through the week and assist with the Outdoor School’s programming. Volunteers will receive a day long training on the first day of the trip, Monday. The camp takes place from Tuesday-Friday. Activities during the week may include but are not limited to attending field studies with students in the redwood forest, conducting river studies and daily nature hikes traveling around to various communities surrounding the camp. One evening campers will participate in a field study which includes a night walk, emphasizing the nocturnal animal life, nighttime sensory awareness, and astronomy. On Saturday, WSU volunteers will have a “tour day” to spend touring San Francisco and will spend the night in the city and depart the following Sunday to fly back to Wichita.

The cost of the trip is $200 per student. The cost includes transportation (airfare to/from, housing, meals, and excursions). The full payment of $200 must be received along with the application by Dec. 9, 2023. If you are not chosen to participate in the trip, you will be refunded the full amount. For more information about the trip, you may attend one of SEAL’s upcoming informational meetings held Sept. 12 and 26 in the SEAL office in 216 Rhatigan Student Center.

Housing and Residence Life kicked off move-in Saturday, Aug. 12 and, throughout the week, over 1,400 students joined in on the excitement of living on campus.

At Wichita State, there are three different living options for students – Shocker Hall, The Suites and The Flats. Shocker Hall is home to a little over 800 freshman students and houses the Living Learning Communities (LLC), where students can choose to live in a community with others who have similar interests. LLCs give students access to exclusive events, leadership opportunities, mentorship opportunities and more. The Suites is also a freshman residence hall and is home to 220 students. The Flats is for upperclassmen with an apartment-style living. The Suites and The Flats are located on Innovation Campus with close access to the YMCA and Braeburn Square.

There are a total of 33 resident assistants, 6 graduate students, and 3 full-time staff members living throughout the halls. In addition to its full-time office staff, Housing and Residence Life employs over 34 students to work in the office throughout the year. It’s all hands-on-deck to uphold its service standards of safety, courtesy, connection and efficiency.

Abigail Moss

Abigail Moss, speech-language pathology graduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), was recently selected for participation in a national Minority Student Leadership Program.

The program’s focus is to recruit and retain racial/ethnic minorities that have been historically under-represented in the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology. It is part of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), which is the national professional, scientific and credentialing association for audiologists, speech-language pathologists and students within those disciplines.

Abigail is one of 40 students chosen from approximately 200 nationwide applicants. The participants will engage in leadership-focused educational activities at the 2023 ASHA Convention, which will take place November 13–18 in Boston, Massachusetts. The program helps students build and enhance their leadership skills and allows them to network with leaders in the professions of audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech, language and hearing sciences.
