Students, faculty and staff can anonymously drop off any unused or expired medications to Student Health Services (SHS) until Oct. 27 and it will dispose of them safely. Drop off any medications or prescriptions to SHS, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

October is National Prescription Drug Take Back Month, which is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) program to prevent drug misuse or abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

The Association of Public & Land-grant Universities (APLU) featured Wichita State as one of the finalists for its Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) University Awards.

The APLU highlighted the benefits WSU’s Innovation Campus provides to both students and industry, and some new expansions coming. The IEP Award winners will be announced at the APLU’s annual meeting Nov 12-24 in Seattle, Washington.

Matt Crow, a Wichita State alumnus and multimedia coordinator in the Office of Admissions, directed and produced a video that will be featured at the Tallgrass Film Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Orpheum Theatre. The video features GoBabyGo, a program sponsored by the College of Engineering, that modifies off-the-shelf ride-on toy cars for children with disabilities. As part of the program, engineering students collaborate with physical therapy students to customize cars and deliver them at no cost to the families.

The video, called a Shock Doc, was created as part of an initiative of the Office of Admissions to create an ongoing digital series featuring students, alumni and faculty. Crow submitted the video to the Tallgrass Film Festival for consideration in the “Kansas Filmmaker” category.

In September, teams from 16 high schools and two-year colleges competed in the inaugural Capture The Wu event, a two-day virtual contest in which teams solve cybersecurity challenges. Wichita State students from the Wichita State Linux User Group (WULUG) and Joe Jabara, the director of the cybersecurity program in the School of Computing, organized and ran the contest.

Winning teams in the high school division were from Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, Eisenhower High School in Goddard and Tuscaloosa Academy in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, while Garden City Community College won the two-year college division.

The Office of Civil Rights, Title IX & ADA Compliance (CTAC) invites all members of the Shocker community to make suggestions regarding accessibility on campus by participating in the WSU ADA Transition Plan survey. The information generated from the survey will help prioritize barriers and generate a proposed schedule for their remediation. 

Wichita State is completing an ADA Transition Plan, under the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The plan will look at barriers to accessibility across the WSU main campus and satellite locations. Input from students, faculty/staff, visitors and community members is a valuable piece of the plan that will help address issues that impact the accessibility of university sidewalks, parking, public right-of-way, facilities as well as WSU activities and services.

The Department of Public Health Sciences has announced that the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program has achieved candidacy status granted by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). This candidacy status is the next major step toward accreditation.

Accreditation serves as a benchmark for excellence in the field, establishing a continuous mechanism for self-assessment and ensuring the highest quality educational experience. Graduates from CAHME-accredited programs gain a valuable competitive edge when seeking employment within the healthcare industry.

The Shocker Leadership Experience (SLE) is a free five-day, four-night overnight retreat experience at Rock Springs 4-H Camp in Junction City, Kansas from Jan. 8 to 12, 2024.

SLE engages participants in leadership knowledge and skill development facilitated in both small and large groups, as well as through numerous interactive activities. The program is great for all students, regardless of leadership experience. Topics include:

• Dynamics of followership
• Building community/belonging
• Leadership power and influence
• Living and leading on purpose

Utilizing the Innovation Hub in the John Bardo Center, College of Engineering students created approximately 70 plaques for the Memorial ’70 ceremony held Oct. 2 at the memorial site on campus. The annual ceremony of remembrance occurs every year to honor WSU football players, administrators and supporters who died in the plane crash Oct. 2, 1970.

At this year’s ceremony, attendees such as survivors and loved ones of the former football players, were gifted with the plaques. The plaques are composed of salvaged aluminum seating from the east side of Cessna Stadium, the same stadium where the WSU football team practiced and played from the 1940s until the 1980s, as well as stained oak wood. Within a few days, the students participated in prototyping, testing and producing 140 parts and laser etching approximately 70 aluminum plaques.
