Did you know Wichita State offers Shocker Parking text alerts?

Members can receive text notifications about street and lot closures, athletics parking and more sent on their smartphone. 

What is a first-gen student? A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parents or legal guardians have not completed a bachelor’s degree and students who are the first person in their immediate families to attend a four-year college or university to attain a bachelor’s degree.

• Faculty and staff help spread the word, the all-call for first-gen artist to apply for a chance to exhibit at the second annual First-Gen Showcase, “Identity.” Applications are now being accepted through Oct. 9. Apply at the link below.
• The First-Generation Honor Society, the Tri-Alpha (Alpha Alpha Alpha) is now accepting applications from all first-gen Wichita State students, faculty, staff and alumni. Tri-Alpha membership is built to support and advocate for the academic excellence of first-generation college students.
• FOCUS ON FIRST-GEN: This week we highlight Ana Guadalupe Lazarín, College of Engineering, director of Broadening Participation and Student Recruitment.
• F1RST-GEN T-Shirts are available in the Rhatigan Student Center Shocker Store for $12.

NuPark, the parking software for Wichita State, has had a few issues after a recent update to a new version. Shocker Parking is aware of the issues and is working with NuPark support to resolve them.

While Shocker Parking is in process of remedying these issues, it is asking partner contacts to email wsuparking@wichita.edu for issues involving trouble assigning ePermits, purchasing ePermits and more.

Please also let Shocker Parking know if ePermit user(s) receive a parking citation because of an error related to this issue.

Dr. Rick Muma, Wichita State University president, will be featured on KMUW’s “Morning Edition” from 7 to 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Muma will be talking about the importance of raising funds for need-based financial aid, which makes higher education more accessible and affordable for low-income students.

During the interview, the president plans to issue a fundraising challenge worth $1,500, which will be funded personally by Muma and first gentleman Rick Case.

The course designation deadline for the Open and Alternative Textbook (OAT) Initiative for the spring 2022 semester is Sept. 30. Teachers using open or alternative materials in their courses can fill out the OAT Course Designation Application form below.

The September issue of Teaching Today features a guest column from Dr. Carolyn Shaw, associate vice president for strategic enrollment management, who shares several easy ways to reach students to make them feel more welcome in class. The issue also provides teachers with ideas about how to manage in-person class discussions when everyone is wearing a mask.

Alec Bohm, a Wichita State Alum and a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, has been nominated for the 2021 Roberto Clemente Award. This prestigious Major League Baseball award is given annually  to the player who best represents the game of baseball by their character, community work, philanthropy and positivity on and off the field. Nominees are selected by their team.

Bohm, who graduated from WSU in 2018, was a first-round pick in the 2018 draft. Alec was runner-up for National League Rookie of the Year in 2020.

Alec contributes to helping others whenever possible through the Alec Bohm Foundation. The foundation’s various projects, both in the United States and Africa, are described in detail at the link below. Baseball fans can also vote for their favorite nominee at this link.

In 2020, Wichita State University faculty, staff, administrators, student, and community leaders were asked to serve on presidential task forces as part of a commitment to shared governance and transparency. The findings from these efforts have helped shape and refine the priorities and strategy of the university.

The work of these task forces is complete. Their insight may inspire further initiatives that serve Wichita State’s vision and mission.
