What is a first-gen student?

A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parents or legal guardians have not completed a bachelor’s degree. A student who is the first person in their immediate family to attend a four-year college or university to attain a bachelor’s degree.

The First-Gen Coordinating Council is proud to support our first-gen graduates. We have a gift for you. We are providing a yellow and white braided cord for eligible graduates to wear on graduation day. By wearing the cord, you are celebrating your graduation as the last first-gen in your family. Those who are eligible can pick up their cords at their designated location.

The W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University is creating online flexibility for three current majors in its degree program. International business, marketing and accounting majors will now be provided online and taught by the same Barton School professors who teach in-person classes.

As of today, Strategic Communications has switched to the updated format of Campus Connection. You might not notice much difference, but read below to learn more about some upgraded features.

  • Those who submit items to the newsletters will now have more control over the content-creation process, including being able to add links, bullet points and notes to the Strategic Communications staff.
  • Each submission to the newsletter will now live on its own web page, so you can share a submission with whomever you want.

Twelve years following receiving her Master’s in Business Administration, Janet Federico decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Wichita State after rediscovering herself as an author, speaker and illustrator later her career.

Janet also holds an associate’s degree in general studies and a bachelor’s degree in applied management and business. She will graduate with her Master’s of Fine Arts in creative writing in May 2022.

“I fell in love with writing when I started writing down the stories I was telling my daughter,” Federico said. “I started drawing pictures with the stories and creating books for her.”

The Shocker Dance Team will host tryouts for the 2021-2022 team virtually.

Dancers who are interested in auditioning for the upcoming season should register for tryouts here.

Prospective team members will be expected to learn a variety of dance skills and styles through video tutorials. The video tutorials will be available at 9 a.m. June 1. The link will be shared with the dancers that have registered using the “Jumpforward” link. Dancers who plan to audition need to register prior to June 1.

All video submissions must be received by noon June 5. All sections of required choreography and skills must be included in the video. This will include across-the-floor skills, band dance, cheer, stinger and hip-hop combo.

The 2021-2022 Shocker Dance team will be announced by 3 p.m. on June 6.

The W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University has launched its Executive-in-Residence program. This program will provide Barton School students, faculty and the Wichita community with vital perspectives and knowledge from industry leaders. Tom Gentile, president and CEO of Spirit AeroSystems, will serve as the program’s first resident for the fall 2021 semester.

“The wisdom of industry leaders is so vast and inspirational,” said Dr. Larisa Genin, dean of the Barton School of Business at Wichita State. “This program will tap into that knowledge. We’re honored to have Spirit AeroSystems CEO Tom Gentile as our first resident. His insights will be an unprecedented and valuable resource to our students and faculty.”
