Susan Thomas — founder and CEO of 10Fold and the spring 2023 entrepreneur-in-residence at the Barton School of Business — will provide a keynote presentation, “An Entrepreneur’s Journey: Finding the Why to Drive Your Success,” as part of the James Schwartz Lecture Series.

The keynote event is at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 in the Woolsey Hall Auditorium.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Following the presentation, a reception will be held in the Woolsey Hall Fidelity Bank Ballroom. All are welcome to attend the event at no charge.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will host Ingrid Fritsch, professor of analytical chemistry from the University of Arkansas, at its next colloquium at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8 in 224 McKinley Hall.

Fritsch’s presentation is titled “Electrochemistry, Magnetic fields and fluid flow: Programming the next generation of microfluidics.” Refreshments will be provided.

Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, is holding a bake sale from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center. There will be cookies, banana bread, vegan options and more items available.

Payments can be made with cash or card. Sigma Tau Delta invites the campus community to come support its mission to spread literacy in the community.

Stuart Kauffman will present a virtual talk hosted by the Barton School of Business’s Institute for the Study of Economic Growth at noon Friday, March 31.

Kauffman is a renowned theoretical biologist. Originally a medical doctor, he has spearheaded several disruptive new theories including Nobel-worthy contributions in fitness landscapes, gene regulatory networks, the theory of affordances and the theory of the adjacent possible. Also a MacArthur Fellow and a Trotter Prize winner, Kauffman has published game changing books like “Origins of Order: Self-organization and Selection in Evolution” and “At Home in the Universe: The Search for the Laws of Self-Organization and Complexity.”

Cindy Coughenour, founder of Fearless and Female, will instruct up to 35 participants on tactics relating to self-defense starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9 in 141 Heskett Center. The workshop is hosted by the Student Activities Council.

Wichita State faculty and staff can register for the one-hour workshop at $10 plus fees and includes interactive instruction and a stabby kitty key ring. An ice cream social will follow the program.

Cindy founded Fearless and Female in 2001 as a direct response to the murder of her childhood friend, Julie Ladd. As a professional speaker and self-defense advocate, Cindy is certified and trained in many different forms of self-defense such as Krav Maga and Jane Jitsu.

Calling all poets. The Student Activities Council (SAC) invites students to its poetry slam event 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 at the Rhatigan Student Center Starbucks stage.

The first 100 guests to attend the event will receive a voucher for a hot drink from Starbucks, valid only on April 12. There is no fee or registration required to attend the event, and all guests are free to listen in on the poetic works.

Poets must be current Wichita State students in order to perform. Registration closes on Thursday, April 6.

Join the Department of Math and Statistics for a public lecture by Dr. Huijing Du, assistant professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The lecture, titled “Multiscale modeling of epidermal-dermal interactions during skin wound healing,” will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, March 10 in room 372 Jabara Hall.

The Project Management Institute Wichita Chapter and WSU Strategic Initiatives are hosting Lee R. Lambert, the co-creator of the Project Management Professional credential, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8 in EE 264 John Bardo Center.

Lambert will present “The Value Proposition of Skillset Match,” which will explore how project management estimates can vary widely from actual performance data, the impact of what has become known as “bait and switch.” and how to calculate the impact on time and cost associated with “bait and switch.”

Students, staff and faculty are welcome to attend the talk, but registration is encouraged. Donuts and coffee will be available for attendees.
