First-Year Seminar students this year will read “Eat Like a Fish” by Bren Smith for Wichita State’s Common Read at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in 141 Woolsey Hall, Fidelity Bank Ballroom. Join Sean Lynott, regional fisheries supervisor with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to learn more about fisheries management in Kansas with an eye to the future.

An overview will be provided of current fisheries practices and how they ensure sustainable use of fish and their environments. The general WSU community is welcome. A drawing for students will be held for a beginner fishing rod and gear (must be present to win).

The 55th observance of Memorial '70 with an illustration of a WSU football player

The 55th anniversary remembrance ceremony of Memorial ’70 will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at the memorial sculpture at the university entrance at Memorial Drive (18th Street) and Hillside. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony in the lobby of Duerksen Fine Arts Center across from the memorial.

The ceremony will honor the 31 people – WSU football players, administrators, supporters and flight crew – who died in the crash in Colorado.

Other Memorial 70 tribute locations on campus include:

  • 202 Rhatigan Student Center, Shocker 70, has Shocker memorabilia. There will be floral tribute and looping PowerPoint featuring those who died because of the plane crash.
  • The Memorial ’70 display case on the Koch Arena concourse has pictures of the deceased and the certificate for the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame.

Those interested in making a tax-deductible contribution in memory of the crash victims can give to the Football ’70 Memorial Scholarship, the only endowed scholarship at WSU dedicated in collective memory to those who died in the tragedy.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a student of any major with at least a 3.0 GPA who demonstrates financial need. Contributions can be made through the WSU Foundation, 1845 Fairmount St., Wichita, KS 67260-0002, for the Football ’70 Memorial Scholarship. Contributions also may be made online.

The Academic Center for Biomedical and Health Humanities (HealthHum) presents award-winning historian and author Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in 110 Woolsey Hall, Frank A. Boettger Auditorium. A reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.

In partnership with the University of Kansas Hall Center for the Humanities. Cooper Owens is the author of “Medical Bondage: Race, Gender and the Origins of American Gynecology”

Mark your calendars for the School of Digital Arts’ open house from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at Shocker Studios, 3803 E. Harry St., Suite 121. The Purple Mile Annual Domestic Violence Memorial and Awareness Walk and Social Service Fair is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 on campus starting at the north side of the Rhatigan Student Center. For the 10th anniversary, join organizers in remembering those impacted by dating/domestic violence in the community over the last decade, learn about resources and connect with others over light refreshments and art.

For those who wish to participate, a one mile walk on campus follows this year’s guest speakers. You can also join afterwards at Social Tap Drinkery in Braeburn Square, where Social Tap is donating 5% of their proceeds to Wichita Family Crisis Center and Harbor House.

The event is hosted by the Midwest Criminal Justice Institute, WSU HOPE Services, Wichita Family Crisis Center and Harbor House.

The Global Village Assembly is an annual open mic event hosted by Women’s, Ethnicity, and Intersectional Studies (WEIS). Each year, it centers on a theme relevant and related to current conversations on gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class and the intersectional experience at WSU.

The event, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in 211 Hubbard Hall, is open to all students, faculty and staff across the university and the broader Wichita-area community. It is a unique opportunity to share about life at WSU and consider changes that we can all do to provide a more equitable space of belonging.

Join the Community Service Board for a morning of volunteering with neighbors in the Shocker Neighborhood. Help those in the Shocker community keep their neighborhoods clean and beautiful. Volunteers will help clean up trash and debris. The next clean-up will be from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

The event celebrates and promotes health, wellness and social service resources within the campus and community. Learn about the unique service providers the are available to you and gain a better understanding about their role in the community.
