Registration for the second virtual Innovation Works Competition is open until noon Oct. 7. To qualify, teams of three to four students must submit a one-minute team presentation video addressing an innovative approach to real-life challenges faced every day by industry and government. The competition will have $12,000 in student prizes.

Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged, but at least one team member must be a current engineering student. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to compete.

Only the top 12 qualifying teams will be invited to continue in the competition, which will be announced Oct. 12.

The final contest theme will be announced on Oct. 15. In the competition, teams will periodically present short pitches to judges during sessions over a 48-hour period (Friday-Sunday). Scoring is based on problem understanding, solution uniqueness, demonstrated value of the solution, solution practicality, and the team’s overall effectiveness communicating.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is kicking off Queer History Month with a screening of the groundbreaking documentary film “Paris Is Burning” beginning at 7 p.m. today, Oct. 1 at Hubbard Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, “Paris Is Burning” offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion houses, from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS and poverty.

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Campus Credit Union will host two drop-off locations this year for Toys-For-Tots that will be open from Oct. 4 to Dec. 15 at the following locations:

  • Campus Credit Union branch located next to the Steve Clark YMCA and the Police Station
  • Campus Credit Union branch at 4960 E. 21st N.

Graduate Student Council & Graduate School Monthly Social for grad students October 8 5:30-7:30 PM Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes

Wichita State’s Graduate School and Graduate Student Council invites graduate students to join the next monthly social event 5:30-7:30 today, today, Oct. 8 at Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes.

The event will include billiards and darts with members of the school and council. Students who check-in will receive a drink ticket.

Due to an injury, Wednesday in Wiedemann has been canceled for Oct. 13. For updates on future organ performances, visit wichita.edu/organ.

Join the Shocker community during a Neighborhood Walk beginning with check-in at 8:15 Saturday, Oct. 2 at a table located at the 3 Keys Fitness parking lot (2628 E. 21st St. N.). Participants can register online. The event is part of Good Neighbor Week Sept. 28-Oct. 4.

Water will be provided to all participants. Participants will also receive hot cider, coffee, and water at the end of the walk. The Steve Clark YMCA will also have family activities for those who wish to stay at the event longer.

In addition to the walk, the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy will be nearby providing free flu vaccinations at the Health Core Clinic parking lot (2707 E. 21st St N.) Participants who wish to receive the vaccine can register at the link below.

Don’t forget to join the Shocker Neighborhood Food Insecurity panel at 5:30 p.m. today via Zoom. The panel, which is part of Good Neighbor Week Sept. 28-Oct. 4, will discuss the impacts of food insecurity in the Shocker Neighborhood. The event is a great opportunity to hear from surrounding campus communities.

OneStop Student Services will host an open house for faculty and staff noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 6 at Jardine Hall (room 112).

The open house will offer guests an opportunity to connect with OneStop specialists and first-year advisors to learn more about the all-hours services they provide students. It will also allow participants a chance to reconnect with the OneStop staff in person. Snacks will be provided.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will host Dr. Jacinta Mutambuki from Oklahoma State University 3:30-4:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at McKinley hall (room 224). The event will also be available via Zoom. Dr. Mutambuki will present her research results in a talk titled “Development of an Inclusive Teaching Observation Protocol (ITOP) for Assessing Instructional Practices in Undergraduate STEM Classrooms.”

Join Shocker Rowing and learn how to row from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the River Vista Boathouse (150 N. McLean Blvd.). Participants can sign up on the day of the event. The cost is $20 per person for lunch and the lesson.
