KMUW’s monthly book club, Literary Feast, features selections made by KMUW staff. For September, members are reading “The History of Sound” by Ben Shattuck.

Members meet at KMUW for a group discussion over dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25. Dinner is provided by Public, but guests are invited to bring a beverage to share with the group.

Join the Ulrich Museum of Art for the next edition of Writing Now Reading Now with Adam Scheffler, assistant professor of poetry, for a poetry reading at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the Dr. Sam & Jacque Kouri Collection Study Center of the Ulrich Museum.

A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. Scheffler is the author of two books of poetry, “Heartworm,” which won the 2021 Moon City Press prize, and “A Dog’s Life,” which won the 2016 Jacer Press Book contest. He holds a doctorate in English from Harvard.

Everyone is welcome to join in watching the Presidential Debate from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 in 233 Rhatigan Student Center, Santa Fe Trail Room. Food and drink will be provided.

Join Wichita State as the campus celebrates National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week from Sept. 9 to Sept. 16.

Hispanic enrollment in higher education is expected to exceed 4.3 million students by 2026, far surpassing the growth rate of any other racial-ethnic group by over 10%. As an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), WSU invites the community to the following programs:

  • Monday, Sept. 9: HSI leaders will provide an overview of the HSI Strategic Plan and the progress over the past year at 2 p.m. in 261 Rhatigan Student Center, Olive Room.
  • Tuesday Sept. 10: Attend a showcase of Latine faculty, student and staff research pertaining to supporting the Hispanic community at 2 p.m. in 265 RSC, Lucas Room.
  • Thursday, Sept. 12: Join a Teams presentation by Dr. Mara Lopez, director of HSI Research Center at the University of Arizona, about bridging HSI to research funding opportunities at 2 p.m. RSVP to the session.
  • Monday, Sept. 16: To end the week celebration, WSU will host a Statewide Hispanic America Leadership Organization Conference for high school, college and teacher and advisors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in 305/306 RSC, Beggs Ballroom.

The School of Digital Arts, in partnership with Justin McClure Creative, is hosting an open house to showcase Synthetic Scenes. The event is from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at Shocker Studios.

Synthetic Scenes is the name of the LED Volume room used for virtual production. It is a direct, applied learning partnership which utilizes new and emerging technology. The partnership has been years in the making, and the School of Digital Arts is excited to see it come to life. Everyone will also be able to see all the updates and additions that have evolved in Shocker Studios.

The event is come and go, with comments around 4:45 p.m. There will be additional corporate entities and partners in attendance. The School of Digital Arts is already partnering with a WSU alum on a film project out of Burbank, California, and have begun conversations with several others about how this technology can be used for commercial production along with narrative production.
