On Friday, Nov. 4, the Student Wellness Center in the Steve Clark YMCA will be open for Counseling and Prevention Services only.

At-home COVID testing kits are available only on this day at the front desk for no charge while supplies last.

Last spring, the UPS-USS Council of the Kansas Board of Regents worked together to conduct a survey on their campuses with support from their administrative leaders. This council represents both Unclassified Professional and University Support Staffs at the six Regents universities — Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas and Wichita State University. The survey focused on topics related to employee satisfaction.

The poll was conducted online during the month of April by the Docking Institute and was emailed to 9,190 total Unclassified Professional and Support Staff employees at the six participating campuses across Kansas. In all, the Docking Institute received 4,053 completed surveys, providing a response rate of 44.1%. At Wichita State University, surveys were emailed to 1,652 UPS and USS employees.

The Docking Institute received 619 completed surveys, resulting in a response rate at WSU of 37.5%.
On behalf of the Wichita State University Staff Senate, I am pleased to share the final survey results with you.

First, we want to extend a special thanks to President Rick Muma for agreeing to fund the survey for Wichita State University employees. The results of the poll are available in three separate reports.

One “Combined” UPS and USS Report:

  • A report that combines the results of both WSU UPS and USS staff together and compares them to the cumulative statewide six KBOR schools’ UPS and USS staffs combined results. On the website, this report is labeled “Combined UPS and USS Results.”

One WSU UPS Report:

  • A report that breaks down the WSU UPS staff results and compares them to the combined UPS staff results at the six statewide KBOR schools. On the website, this report is labeled “UPS Staff Results.”

One WSU USS Report:

  • A report that breaks down the WSU USS staff results and compares them to the combined USS staff results at the six statewide KBOR schools. On the website, this report is labeled “USS Staff Results.”

The reports will be available beginning at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday, Nov. 1). Go here to see the results at that time.

The results of the Docking Institute survey will be presented to KBOR at its December meeting.

Here are a few of the key findings that stood out:

  • Regarding morale, 63.9% of respondents answered that morale was either “Extremely Positive” or “Somewhat Positive.”
  • A larger percentage of WSU respondents than the other university respondents reported that their work is “greatly appreciated” by immediate supervisors, co-workers, department heads, customers/colleagues, and administration.
  • When asked reasons for job satisfaction, 87.9% of WSU respondents strongly agreed or agreed with the statement, “I enjoy the things I do at work.”
  • Key themes in the open-ended comments included (1) Pay is too low; (2) Allow a flexible schedule; (3) Improve/expand tuition assistance benefits.

As we move forward, our WSU Staff Senate, along with WSU administration, will look closely at the results of the survey to determine what initiatives we can develop on our campus to act on the issues and topics brought forth in the responses.

If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, email Staff Senate President Denise Gimlin at denise.gimlin@wichita.edu. The senate will keep staff informed through senate updates as they work on developing plans for improvement.

Wichita NAACP 2022 Awardees; Dr. Rick Muma, Person of the Year; Dr. Kevin Sylvester Harrison, HN Sims Excellence in Education

Wichita State University President Rick Muma and Dr. Kevin Sylvester Harrison, director of diversity, equity and inclusion at WSU, were each presented awards this weekend from the Wichita chapter of the NAACP.

Muma was named Wichita NAACP’s Person of the Year, an honor that reflects the work he and WSU do on the WSU campus and in the Shocker Neighborhood to develop a more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for a thriving community and a stronger Kansas.

Harrison — who also holds the role of visiting professor in WSU’s Dorothy & Bill Cohen Honors College — was named the winner of the H.N. Sims Excellence in Education Award. The award honors his dedication to education in the Wichita community, specifically as it relates to telling the complete story of America and the Black experience.

Thank You

Thanks to all the monetary and food donations made by faculty and staff during the Stock the Shocker Support Locker Challenge, the locker received 25% more donations than in 2021.

WSU staff won this year’s competition, but it was a close one, with just 50 more item donations than faculty.

The Faculty Senate and Staff Senate would like to extend a big thank you to all Wichita State employees for their donations, as well as to University Police officers for transporting donations from the collection sites to the locker.

Total donations

2022: 1,750 items, $595 collected

2021: 444 items, $945 collected

2020: 365.95 pounds, $2,000 collected

Dr. Jennifer Friend, incoming dean of the College of Applied Studies

I’m pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Friend will be joining Wichita State starting Jan. 9, 2023, as dean of the College of Applied Studies.

Dr. Friend comes to us from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, where she has spent five years, most recently as the associate provost for Academic Affairs and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

She also spent 12 years at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and 13 years as a teacher and principal in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Dr. Friend’s focus supports culturally responsive learning, research opportunities and community engagement — with an emphasis on diversity, integrity, collaboration, discovery and leadership.

Those goals, along with her 30 years of experience working in education, make her the perfect fit for Wichita State.

I want to extend my gratitude to the dean’s search committee and to Interim Dean Clay Stoldt, who contributed so much as he served in the interim role for two years.

I can’t wait for Dr. Friend to come on board and begin meeting and working with our campus community.

Sincerely,

Shirley Lefever, executive vice president and provost

Hello, Shocker family!

The leaves are turning, the weather is getting colder and before we know it, the winter holiday season will be upon us.

It’s been a wonderful year so far at Wichita State — and that’s because of all the hard work and dedication from you, my fellow Shockers.

As a token of my appreciation for all that you do, WSU is providing all benefits-eligible employees two personal days away from work during the upcoming campus shutdown. Employees will not have to use accrued leave for these two days during shutdown and may only use them from Dec. 21, 2022, to Jan. 2, 2023. The two holiday personal days will not be available except during the upcoming campus shutdown.

See these frequently asked questions for more information on your leave days.

Finally, you’re all invited to our annual tradition — the Winter Holiday Party — from 1-4 p.m. Dec. 1 in the RSC Beggs Ballroom. More details to come soon in WSU Today.

Thank you once again for all you’ve done this year for our students, your colleagues and all of Shocker Nation.

Go Shockers!

President Rick Muma
