The WSU AAUP Committee A co-chairs Rannfrid Lasine Thelle and Edwin Sawan invite faculty to join in discussing the pressing concerns of academic freedom challenging our vocations. As they kick off a series called “Out of the Cave,” participants gather around honest conversation and light refreshments at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 in 260 Jabara Hall. Bring a friend.

Students will present trifolds on topics such as Christian antisemitism, religious rationales for colonization and genocides, anti-Black racism and its political manifestations in U.S. history, roots and expressions of white supremacy, biblical rationales for the equality of races. Displays will be up in the library from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 4. Meet the students from 2 to 3:15 p.m.

For their final projects, students enrolled in The Bible and the Ancient Near East will give public presentations of their comparative study of biblical texts in their ancient cultural contexts from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 in RSC 257.

Topics are wide-ranging — including comparing the biblical flood account with Mesopotamian and Greek flood stories, exploring the many functions of angels and seraphs in the Bible and their Assyrian and Ugaritic cultural backgrounds, methods of prophecy, purification rituals, and lamentation in their biblical and surrounding cultural settings.

Attendees will get a glimpse into the ancient historical context of the Bible while giving the students a real-life experience of presenting to an interested audience.
