Professor Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton School distinguished chair in International Business and director of the Center for International Business Advancement — will participate in a panel discussion hosted by the Chronicle of Higher Education at 3 p.m. July 27 via Zoom. Registration is required to attend.

The topic of the discussion is the future of field research. During the event, Haley and other experts will discuss case studies showcasing the potential of field research as they address topics, including the following:

  • The logistics of remote or widely distributed research sites
  • Issues of cultural appropriation and biased assumptions in ethnographic studies
  • Practicalities of researcher safety and appropriate behavior in remote locations
  • Shifts in funding priorities.

Professor Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton School distinguished chair in International Business and director of the Center for International Business Advancement — was covered several times recently about her research on international business and strategy.

  • A Radio Free Asia documentary (U.S. government) featuring Haley won the Silver Telly award. It was also seen at the US Global Media’s Press Freedom Film Festival in June. The documentary,  entitled “Caught in the Crossfires,” is available in both Mandarin and English and available here.
  • In early June, Bloomberg News approached Haley for her views on whether food-distribution companies could survive internationally.
  • In June, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) also approached Haley about rising gas prices.

Dr. Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton School distinguished chair in International Business and director of the Center for International Business Advancement —received several awards and honors in May.

  • First, Haley participated during three days at the National Security Forum at Montgomery, Alabama. Haley participated in the Grand Strategy seminar, a competitive seminar open to military and government leaders. Other distinguished civilian participants attending the seminar included a senator, a federal bank reserve head and a senior businessperson. Haley was brought in for her expertise on China, India, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia.
  • Second, Haley and her co-authors won the Tudor Rickards & Susan Moger Award for the Best Paper of 2021 in Creativity and Innovation Management, a peer-reviewed journal. The paper is entitled Practices of creative leadership: A qualitative meta-analysis in haute cuisine.”
  • Finally, Haley was honored by the Wichita Business Journal as a Women who Leads in Education honoree.

The Barton School of Business is offering a four-week online course, Doing Business in Asia (IB 690M) for graduate and advanced undergraduate credit beginning June 6. The class is also open to the community. No prerequisites are required.

This course is for anyone with an interest in developing awareness, skills, and resources to understand entering and succeeding in Asian markets and is taught by Dr. Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton distinguished chair in International Business and director of the Center for International Business Advancement. Haley is a recognized global expert on the subject and has lived and worked on five continents including Asia (in India, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia).

The Center for International Business Advancement (CIBA) at the Barton School of Business will host a virtual a panel organized by Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and Aalto University about corporate sanctions against Russia 6-8 a.m. May 19.

Guests can ask questions and provide comments at the live discussion. The panel will be moderated by Sofia Villo Aalto University, Finland, doctoral candidate, and Natalya Turkina RMIT vice-chancellor’s postdoctoral fellow.

The panel consists of Stephen Brammer, University of Bath, United Kingdom School of Management dean, Usha Haley, professor and Barton chair, Arno Kourula, University of Amsterdam associate professor, Jukka Mäkinen, Estonian Business School professor, and Guido Palazzo University of Lausanne, Switzerland, professor.

Usha Haley — W. Frank Barton distinguished chair in International Business and professor of management recently gave an interview to Newsmax about the issue of China’s hoarding of food, and the ramifications for national security. She informed Newsmax that China’s stockpiling of food stemmed from various political and historical factors and that China was not solely or even mainly responsible for the current spike in food prices in the United States.

The World Trade Council of Wichita, Center for International Business Advancement and the International Business Studies Association are hosting the first dinner program in the COVID era on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its aftermath on Friday, April 8. A number of sports organizations, including those in European club football and tennis, have levied sanctions against Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. The Associated Press recently approached Usha Haley for her opinion.

Haley is the W. Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business, and elected chair of the World Trade Council of Wichita.

Haley has done in-depth research on the efficacy of sanctions and boycotts and has featured some of this research in her book on Apartheid in South Africa, “Multinational Corporations in Political Environments:  Ethics, Values and Strategies.”
