The Composite Structural Engineering Technology badge program provides the students with the background knowledge related to composite material applications, materials, processes, manufacturing, structural design, proof of structures, maintenance, Aeroelastic issues, crashworthiness, fire safety and lightning protection. This course serves as a foundation course for the follow-on courses which elaborate on the aforementioned topics.

Mind and Movement badge

Wichita State’s badge program makes workforce training and continuing education accessible and affordable. Each badge is designed with the practicing professional in mind so coursework can be completed online and at your own pace.

The Mind and Movement badge program introduces the interaction between physical exercise and mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, including an overview of potential therapeutic uses in workplace wellness, and use as a complementary modality for serving people struggling to manage stress, anxiety, depression, addiction or PTSD. Movement as a strategy for maintaining and enhancing cognitive function and memory across the lifespan is addressed. Both scholarly literature and real-world examples of the application of physical activity are employed. Course content includes opportunities for personal application of the concepts and discussion of the possibilities for professional use.

The Creative Interventions: Mindfulness in Practice badge program will explore the use of mindfulness and compassion in practice. Students will learn about the importance of using mindfulness and compassion for self-care as well as client care. The badge will explore mindfulness and compassion through the trinity of mind, body, and spirit and learn techniques and skills to incorporate into practice.

Medical Terminology: Introduction to Medical Terminology badge

The Medical Terminology: Introduction to Medical Terminology badge program provides an overview of medical terminology. Students in this course will learn how medical terms are formed, how to effectively translate medical terms, and how to apply those terms to the medical setting. Students will also learn the terms used to describe the gross anatomy of the body and the position of the body, as well as the basic terms that relate to diagnostic and laboratory procedures, and pharmacology.

The Professional Writing Series: Writing for Social Media badge program emphasizes how to successfully write for various social media mediums. Using open educational learning materials, students will learn how to develop a unique and professional social media tone that is directly applicable to their field of business. Students will also learn about the proper written composition for social media, discuss them, have written social media opportunities and ultimately produce a professional blog site of their own.

Additionally, the Professional Writing Series: Editing Social Media badge program emphasizes how to successfully edit personal social media accounts to highlight professionalism. Using open educational learning materials, students will learn how to analyze personal social media accounts for unprofessionalism in images and text. Students will also learn about professional social media accounts and how they can be utilized in job searches and for professional networking.

Introduction to Criminal Justice: Courts badge

The Introduction to Criminal Justice: Courts badge program provides an introduction to criminal justice with an emphasis on the courts. Using OER (open educational resource) materials, students will be introduced to the federal and state court systems in the United States; including the history, functions, structures, actors, and trial processes. Students will also learn about challenges facing the courts and how they impact criminal justice and the United States.

Shape at Work badge

Wichita State’s badge program makes workforce training and continuing education accessible and affordable. Each badge is designed with the practicing professional in mind so coursework can be completed online and at your own pace. 

The Shape at Work badge program will provide students with essential information about biases and misconceptions associated with size and shape of employees, legal and ethical issues, experiences of employees. Activities in the course will allow students to experience the challenges for employees with different sizes, shapes, looks and expressions. Further, students will become aware of practices in improving opportunities for all employees.

The Wichita City Council approved a plan today that will move forward a project between Wichita State University and the University of Kansas to build a 471,000-square-foot health sciences center in the heart of downtown Wichita. 

Council members agreed to sell or lease two tracts of land – at 214 S. Topeka (where the Wichita Transit Center, set to move to Delano, is currently located) and a parking lot at the southeast corner of Broadway and William.

The university has extended the deadline to apply for fall 2023 tuition assistance. The new deadline is Friday, Aug. 25.

Applications for fall 2023 tuition assistance can be submitted through the online application form. Faculty and staff may apply for employee, spouse or dependent tuition assistance.

Tuition assistance can be applied to undergraduate, graduate or to the badge programs courses.

Wichita State invites all faculty and staff to its annual Fall Address at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 in Wiedemann Hall. The event will also be available to watch via YouTube.

President Rick Muma, with the assistance of several university representatives, will outline key focus areas for the coming year:
