Shocker tennis earned two championships at the American Conference Individual Singles and Doubles Championships Oct. 25 in Houston.
WSU’s Xin Tong Wang entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and won the title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 2 seed Uma Bakaityte of Rice University.
In doubles, Wang and Giorgia Roselli fell to University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Amalia Widdowson and Shona Nakano in a three-set match, 7-6 (8), 6-2, (11-9) in the championship.
On the men’s side, Wichita State’s Pablo Roche Alcaya and Rodrigo Cruz defeated University of Tulsa’s Victor Tosetto and Otso Martikainen, 6-4, 7-6 (1) to win the doubles title.
By winning the titles, the three Shocker advance to the ITA Conference Masters Championships, scheduled for Nov. 5-8 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia.
The top four singles players earn spots in the NCAA Individual Championship. Each conference sends one doubles team per gender, and the top two finalists (champion and runner-up) advance to the NCAA Doubles Championship. Both are decided Nov. 17-22 in Athens, Georgia.
