Artist Doug Coffin stands between two of his sculptures on the WSU campus.

Join the Ulrich Museum of Art for a talk from Doug Coffin — who created the two Spirit Totems, “Sun” and “Moon” at the Duerksen Amphitheatre — at 6 p.m. Thursday Sept. 19 in the Beren Gallery. Join a reception at 5:30 p.m.

In both his sculptures and paintings, the New Mexico-based artist (Potowatomi and Creek) has developed a style that suggests a fusion of the ancient totemic form used by many Native cultures with the abstraction and geometric forms of the modernist. The Ulrich installed “the 87th and 88th additions “Sun” and “Moon” to the Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection in April 2024.

Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS) is wanting to share a helpful resource regarding managing conflict with students at WSU. The guide, which can be found on the Student Conduct website, discusses five easy steps to better manage conflict:

  • Get in the right mindset
  • Analyze the conflict
  • Address the conflict
  • Focus on the future
  • Use your resources

These tips can be helpful in your everyday life on- or off-campus, but it’s also important to know that you are not alone in managing your conflict. If you ever feel like the conflict is too much for you to handle, SCCS offers conflict management as part of its services and are happy to help. Additionally, if you feel that you are unsafe due to a conflict, call the University Police Department at 316-978-3450. If you believe a report needs to be made to SCCS due to the conflict, you can fill out the conduct incident response form.

Faculty soloist Dr. Cristina Castaldi, soprano, will perform Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” a nostalgic piece set to text by James Agee. The WSU Symphony will also present Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3 in Eb Major” (“Eroica”), a revolutionary work that was originally dedicated to Napoleon before Beethoven famously withdrew the honor. Joining the WSU Symphony is the Blue Valley Northwest High School Chamber Symphony, directed by Michael Arbucci.

The concert begins with “The Block” by Carlos Simon, a vibrant piece from 2018 inspired by the art of Romare Bearden, capturing the energy of a Harlem city block.
