How to make officiating a lucrative business with John Blazek Thursday, September 26 NCAA NJCAA

Join Campus Recreation in welcoming NCAA/NJCCA sport official and Wichita State alumnus, John Blazek, as he shares how to make officiating a lucrative business and where it can take you. All are welcome to hear him speak at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 in 218 Hubbard Hall.

Blazek will talk about how officiating is a business, not a hobby, and is centered around people, and how Shockers can start officiating now through WSU intramural sports.

Blazek, who was the starting LB and 1975-76 MVP for the Shockers, is also the supervisor of officials for the D1, D2 National Junior College Basketball Tournament; current NCAA DII National coordinator and NJCAA National official consultant; and the former KCAC and KJCCC men’s basketball supervisor of officials.

Wichita State’s Photography and Printmaking Guilds are seeking student artwork submissions for “Bare-Bones,” an exhibition of photographic and print works. Any WSU student, regardless of major, is encouraged to participate.

Printed photo submissions must be frameless and have name, title and email attached. Submissions must be dropped off at 104 McKnight Hall by Oct. 1. For more information, contact cremindken@gmail.com.

The Office of Student Accommodations and Testing (OSAT) will be offering a new resource called Kurzweil 3000 (sharepoint.com) for all students this fall semester. Join OSAT from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 for a virtual presentation on how Kurzweil 3000 can help increase your success.

Kurzweil 3000 is an assistive technology and learning literacy tool recommended for students who have difficulties reading (ESL, dyslexia, etc.). It is designed to help students learn course materials in school. With functions such as text-to-speech, highlighting and integrated notetaking and brainstorming, the assistive technology enables students with learning difficulties to fully engage in what they are learning and to focus on the tasks at hand.

Rafael Guereque

Rafael Guereque, a junior at Wichita State, is a first-generation college student from Hugoton, Kansas, who is already gaining real-world experience in his chosen field of forensic science. Rafael is now interning with the Wichita Police Department. His work involves riding along with police officers and collaborating with forensic scientists. For Rafael, this hands-on experience is a critical part of his education.

“I’m excited to get some real-world experience in my field of study and to see how each aspect of law enforcement works together to ensure proficient and proper results,” Rafael said. This internship allowed him to observe how theory translates into practice and provides him the chance to build strong professional connections within the police department. Rafael hopes to refine his skills in writing professional reports — an essential part of his future career. “I’m already a strong writer, but there is a clear difference between writing an essay for class and writing a report for my career. I’ve always believed the best way to learn a job is to do it yourself,” he said.
